Chapter 13: The Daughter Vanessa Hid
The storage unit became silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that comes after a building collapses and everyone is standing in the dust, trying to understand what just happened.
I stared at the birth certificate in my hands.
Emily Voss.
Mother: Vanessa Carter.
My wife.
My hands started shaking.
“No.””
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
She looked exhausted.
For the first time, she didn’t look like someone who had control over the situation.
She looked like someone who had been caught.
“Richard…”
I looked at her.
“You had a daughter.””
She didn’t answer.
“You had another child this entire time.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
I laughed.
A painful, broken sound.
“You didn’t know?””
I held up the paper.
“You hid a child from me.””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“How was it?””
My voice echoed through the storage unit.
“Explain to me how hiding a little girl for years is not exactly what it looks like.””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then away.
“She was taken from me.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Taken?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
His expression hardened.
“You abandoned her.””
“I protected her.””
“By pretending she never existed?””
Vanessa started crying.
“She was in danger.””
I stared at her.
“From who?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the first honest thing she had done.
Daniel picked up another folder.
“Richard.””
I turned.
Inside were medical records.
School records.
Photographs.
Emily growing up.
But every photo showed something strange.
Different homes.
Different cities.
Different last names.
Like someone had spent years hiding her.
“Where is she now?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.””
Thomas looked furious.
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I lost her.””
“You lost your daughter?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You lost yours too.””
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Two children.
Two families.
Two lives destroyed by secrets.
Rachel moved closer.
“Vanessa, tell the truth.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
Rachel’s voice was quiet.
“I think we both failed children who needed us.””
That sentence changed something.
For a moment, nobody fought.
Because beneath all the lies…
There were children.
Lily.
Emily.
Both innocent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you help Thomas?””
She wiped her face.
“Because he promised he could find Emily.””
My anger softened slightly.
“But you knew what he was doing to Lily.””
She looked down.
“I thought I could control it.””
I stared.
“That’s what this was?””
She nodded.
“I thought I could get Lily to Thomas temporarily. He had resources. Connections. He could find Emily.””
“And if Lily got hurt?””
Her silence answered.
I stepped back.
I couldn’t recognize the woman in front of me.
The woman who made my daughter scrub floors.
The woman who threatened a six-year-old.
The woman who was also a mother searching for her missing child.
Both things were true.
And that made it worse.
Daniel opened another file.
“This is interesting.””
“What?””
He showed me a photograph.
A woman standing beside Emily.
Older.
Familiar.
I looked closer.
My breath stopped.
“Evelyn.””
Rachel stepped beside me.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed at the date.
“This photo was taken three months ago.””
Thomas grabbed it.
“My sister?””
Evelyn.
The woman everyone thought was trying to take Lily.
The woman everyone thought was part of the problem.
She was with Emily.
Alive.
And involved.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Richard.””
Everyone froze.
Because we all knew that voice.
Evelyn.
“Where is my daughter?””
Her voice was calm.
“Safe.””
“You have no idea what safe means.””
My grip tightened.
“Where is Emily?””
A pause.
Then:
“She’s with me.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Let me talk to her.””
Evelyn ignored him.
“Richard, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Everything you know about Lily’s story is incomplete.””
I looked at my daughter.
“What else is there?””
Her voice became quieter.
“Lily was never the only child they were protecting.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who is they?””
Another pause.
Then Evelyn said:
“The person who started all of this.””
The call ended.
Daniel looked at me.
“Who?””
I stared at the phone.
Because I already knew.
There was only one person left.
May you like
The one person everyone had forgotten.
My father.
