Chapter 4: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The woman standing outside my door looked exactly like a ghost.

Her face was thinner.

Her hair was shorter.

There were faint scars near her left eyebrow that I had never seen before.

But her eyes…

Those eyes were impossible to forget.

“Rachel?””

My voice barely came out.

Behind me, Daniel stopped breathing.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to say.

Then Rachel whispered my name.

“Richard.””

My entire body went numb.

Six years.

Six years of waking up beside an empty pillow.

Six years of watching Lily ask why other children had mothers who came to school events.

Six years of telling myself that the person I loved most was gone.

And now she was standing in front of me.

Alive.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know this is hard.””

“No.””

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

“You’re alive?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

My anger arrived before my happiness.

“You let me bury you.””

Her face collapsed.

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

My voice rose.

“You disappeared. You let me raise Lily thinking her mother was dead.””

“I was trying to keep her safe.””

“From who?””

Rachel looked past me.

Toward the living room.

Toward Lily’s bedroom.

“From Vanessa.””

The name felt like a punch.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Rachel, you need to explain everything.””

She nodded slowly.

“I will.””

She entered the house.

But before she walked farther, she stopped.

Her eyes landed on the family photos hanging on the wall.

There were pictures of Lily growing up.

Her first day of kindergarten.

Her birthday parties.

Christmas mornings.

Rachel touched one frame.

Her fingers trembled.

“I watched all of these.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“From a distance.””

My anger softened for one second.

“You watched your own daughter grow up?””

“I had to.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I was told if I came back, Lily would disappear.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who told you that?””

She looked directly at me.

“Vanessa.””

The room became silent.

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Start from the beginning.””

Rachel sat down slowly.

“I discovered something six years ago.””

“What?””

“A financial account.””

I frowned.

“What kind of account?””

“One connected to Vanessa.””

I felt a cold wave pass through me.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

Rachel looked at Lily’s bedroom door.

“Before I died, I found out Vanessa had been moving money from our family accounts.””

“She stole money?””

“Not exactly.””

“Then what?””

Rachel hesitated.

“She was building something.””

“What?””

“A new life.””

My jaw tightened.

“With who?””

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

“With someone who could give her more power.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who?””

Rachel whispered:

“Evelyn’s husband.””

I froze.

“What?””

Rachel nodded.

“Vanessa and Mark were working together.””

The name hit me.

Mark Carter.

Evelyn’s husband.

The man who had comforted me after Rachel’s accident.

The man who told me he would help find answers.

“He was involved?””

Rachel nodded.

“They wanted Lily.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because of the inheritance.””

Everything suddenly felt darker.

Rachel continued.

“After I died, Lily would receive money from my parents’ trust.””

I looked toward my daughter.

“But that money was locked until she turned eighteen.””

“Exactly.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“So they needed control of Lily.””

Rachel nodded.

“And you.””

I looked at her.

“Me?””

“They needed you distracted.””

My chest tightened.

“The accident.””

Rachel looked down.

“That night wasn’t an accident.””

The words landed like thunder.

I remembered the phone call.

The police report.

The twisted metal.

The hospital.

Everything.

“No.””

Rachel reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small flash drive.

“I found this before they knew I knew.””

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because Vanessa found out.””

The room went cold.

“She came to my apartment.””

My eyes widened.

“You had another apartment?””

Rachel nodded.

“I was hiding.””

“From my wife?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“She told me if I went back to you, she would make sure Lily was taken away.””

I remembered Lily’s words.

Mommy says Daddy already signed the papers.

My hands clenched.

“She’s been doing this for years.””

Rachel nodded.

“She wanted you to believe I was dead.””

“Why?””

“Because a dead woman can’t fight for custody.””

A noise came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“Richard.””

I turned.

Vanessa was standing there.

But she wasn’t alone.

She held Lily’s hand.

And my daughter looked terrified.

Vanessa’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I wondered how long it would take before you found out.””

Rachel stood immediately.

“Let her go.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You still think you have power here?””

I stepped forward.

“Get away from Lily.””

Vanessa squeezed Lily’s shoulder.

Not hard.

Just enough.

Enough to make my daughter flinch.

My heart broke.

Rachel saw it too.

“Vanessa, don’t.””

Vanessa looked at Rachel.

“You should have stayed dead.””

The words froze everyone.

Then Vanessa smiled.

“Because now I have no reason to hide.””

She reached into her purse.

May you like

And pulled out a document.

“I think it’s time Richard sees what really happened six years ago.””
