Chapter 12: The Child Behind the Secret

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

Lily is not the only child who was hidden from you.

My hands shook.

“No.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Richard?””

I couldn’t answer.

The letter continued.

Your mother and I made mistakes. Mistakes that affected innocent children. I spent my final years trying to correct what others had done.

My father.

The man who taught me honesty.

The man who told me family was everything.

Had secrets.

Daniel watched my face.

“What does it say?””

I handed him the letter.

He read silently.

Then looked up.

“There’s more.””

I took it back.

There was another page.

A photograph fell out.

I picked it up.

It showed my father standing beside a woman I didn’t recognize.

And a young child.

A little girl.

The girl looked about Lily’s age.

My stomach tightened.

At the bottom of the photograph was one sentence.

Your sister.

I stopped breathing.

“My sister?””

Rachel looked confused.

“You never told me you had one.””

“Because I don’t.””

Thomas stared at the picture.

Then his expression changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“Where did you get this?””

“It was in the letter.””

Thomas grabbed the photo.

His face turned pale.

“I know this girl.””

My heart pounded.

“How?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because she is my daughter.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Thomas stared at the photograph.

“This is Emily.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

“No.””

I looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Thomas’s voice became quiet.

“My daughter disappeared seven years ago.””

I felt sick.

“You never told anyone?””

“Because I thought she was dead.””

Everyone was silent.

Then Lily spoke.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

She was looking at the photograph.

“Who is that?””

I walked toward her.

“Sweetheart, do you know this girl?””

Lily slowly nodded.

My heart stopped.

“How?””

“She came to Mommy’s house.””

Rachel looked shocked.

“When?””

Lily hugged her rabbit.

“A long time ago.””

“How long?””

She thought.

“Before you came home from your trip.””

I froze.

Before I came home?

“What did she say?””

Lily whispered:

“She said Mommy was lying.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Lily.””

My daughter flinched.

I stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

Lily continued.

“She gave me something.””

“What?””

She pointed toward her backpack.

I grabbed it.

Inside was a small key.

Attached to it was a note.

The handwriting was different.

A child’s handwriting.

But the words were clear.

Daddy,

If you found this, it means Vanessa didn’t stop you.

The key opens the place where she hid the truth.

Don’t trust anyone.

Not even the people who say they love you.

My heart raced.

Daniel took the key.

“Where does this go?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel whispered:

“I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed.

“Vanessa had a storage unit.””

Thomas stared.

“How do you know?””

“Because she used it to hide things from me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What’s inside?””

For the first time…

Vanessa looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Afraid.

“That key shouldn’t exist.””

My blood ran cold.

Because that meant one thing.

Whatever was behind that door…

Vanessa had spent years making sure nobody found it.

We drove to the storage facility before sunrise.

The unit was at the very end of the building.

Number 314.

Daniel unlocked it.

The door rolled upward.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Photos.

Documents.

Records.

Every secret Vanessa had collected.

I stepped inside.

Then I saw something on the wall.

A photograph.

A family photograph.

My father.

Vanessa.

Thomas.

Rachel.

And two little girls.

Lily.

And Emily.

My knees nearly gave out.

Because written beneath the photo were five words.

The children who started the war.

And behind the photograph was another document.

A birth certificate.

I picked it up.

The name at the top made my blood freeze.

Emily Voss.

Mother:

Vanessa Carter.

I looked at my wife.

The woman who had spent years beside me.

The woman I trusted with my child.

May you like

And whispered:

“You had another daughter.””
