Chapter 5: The Evidence Hidden in the Shadows

Vanessa placed the document on the coffee table.

She looked strangely relaxed.

That scared me more than anger would have.

People who were innocent panicked.

People who were caught lied.

But Vanessa looked prepared.

“You want answers?”” she asked.

I stared at her.

“Yes.””

She smiled.

“Then you’re finally ready.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You spent six years hiding. You don’t get to act like the victim.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

Pain.

Guilt.

Anger.

All at once.

I looked between them.

“Someone start explaining.””

Vanessa picked up the document.

“This is Rachel’s medical record.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What?””

“She wasn’t supposed to survive.””

Rachel looked away.

I turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel whispered:

“It means I almost didn’t.””

Vanessa walked around the room.

“She was injured badly that night.””

“Yes,” I said.

“She was unconscious.””

“Yes.””

“But the hospital records show something interesting.””

She handed the paper to Daniel.

He read quickly.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“Why was your name removed from the emergency contact list?””

Rachel said nothing.

Vanessa smiled.

“Because Rachel asked them to.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Is that true?””

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

“Of her.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re still lying.””

“No.””

“You ran away.””

“I was trying to survive.””

I looked at Rachel.

“You made me think you were dead.””

Her tears fell.

“I know.””

“Do you understand what that did to me?””

“I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You weren’t there when Lily cried every night.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

“You weren’t there when she asked if you stopped loving her.””

“I know.””

“You don’t get to come back and pretend nothing happened.””

Rachel nodded.

“I know.””

Her answer hurt more than an argument.

Because she wasn’t defending herself.

She accepted the pain.

Vanessa watched us carefully.

Then she spoke.

“See?””

We looked at her.

“She abandoned you.””

Rachel turned.

“No.””

“You disappeared.””

“To protect Lily.””

“You left your husband alone.””

“I left because you threatened my child.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You always were dramatic.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Enough.””

He held the document.

“This paper doesn’t prove anything.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“It proves Rachel was hiding information.””

“It proves nothing about Richard’s signature.””

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Daniel saw it too.

“You’re nervous about that document, aren’t you?””

Vanessa became quiet.

Daniel continued.

“Because the signature might be fake.””

“Might be?””

He shook his head.

“No. I’m beginning to think it is.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You think you know everything?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“But I know someone who does.””

He held up the flash drive.

“Her.””

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“You found that?””

Rachel nodded.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

I moved between them.

“You’re done.””

She looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes became cold.

“Then ask Rachel why she really disappeared.””

I looked back.

Rachel froze.

“Richard…”

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Vanessa smiled.

“There it is.””

Rachel looked down.

“Tell him.””

Rachel didn’t move.

“Tell him how you found out about Lily.””

My heartbeat changed.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Richard…”

“What does that mean?””

She whispered:

“Lily wasn’t the reason they wanted control of the money.””

I stared.

“Then what was?””

Rachel looked at my daughter.

May you like

And the next words destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“Because Lily wasn’t your only child.””
