Chapter 8: The Unexpected Accusation
For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.
The words didn’t make sense.
The account belonged to someone standing here.
Everyone started looking around.
At Vanessa.
At Richard.
At Eleanor.
At Thomas.
Then finally…
At me.
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
Richard’s expression softened.
“Emma—”
“No.””
I stepped backward.
“I never had access to any accounts.””
Daniel immediately moved beside me.
“Richard, explain.””
Richard held up his phone.
“The police traced the account information.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me more.
Daniel took a breath.
“Emma, the account was opened under your father’s name.””
The world went silent.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas looked at me carefully.
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“What do you mean?””
He looked at the notebook.
“Your father created that account.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
Because whatever he was about to say hurt.
“He wasn’t stealing money.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then what was he doing?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“He was moving the money away from Vanessa.””
The guests stared.
Richard looked confused.
“Why would he do that?””
“Because he knew she was trapped.””
Vanessa laughed suddenly.
Everyone turned.
“Trapped?””
Her laugh was bitter.
“That’s what he told you?””
She looked at me.
“Your father always wanted to save everyone.””
I felt anger rise.
“Don’t talk about him like you knew him.””
Vanessa stared back.
“I knew him better than you think.””
That sentence froze me.
“What does that mean?””
She looked away.
And for the first time, she looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not cruel.
Just tired.
“Your father was the only person who believed I could change.””
Nobody spoke.
“He found out what happened and gave me a choice.””
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
“What choice?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He told me to confess.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“And you didn’t.””
“No.””
Her voice became quiet.
“I was scared.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
The woman who had ruined so many lives was admitting fear.
“I thought if people knew, everything would disappear.””
Thomas interrupted.
“And then you made the worst decision of your life.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
“I watched Michael lose everything.””
His voice became sharp.
“I watched Emma lose her father.””
Vanessa looked down.
The anger on her face weakened.
I stared at her.
“My father tried to help you?””
She didn’t answer.
“Didn’t he?””
Finally, she whispered:
“Yes.””
The word hurt more than I expected.
Because my father had spent his last days fighting.
And I had never known why.
Vanessa looked at me.
“He said you would hate him if he told you.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What?””
“He knew you loved him.””
My throat tightened.
“He thought you would blame yourself.””
I looked away.
Because she was right about one thing.
If my father had told me everything, I would have tried to fix it.
I would have carried the weight with him.
A silence fell.
Then Thomas spoke.
“But Vanessa still didn’t tell the truth.””
Richard looked at his daughter.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
Then Thomas said something that changed everything.
“Because someone threatened her.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Thomas continued.
“The person controlling the foundation knew Vanessa was weak.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?””
Thomas looked toward the entrance.
“I don’t know.””
A chill moved through me.
“What do you mean?””
Thomas stared at the driveway.
“I only know one thing.””
“What?””
He pointed toward the road.
“The person who controlled Vanessa…”
A black sedan slowly pulled up outside the gates.
Thomas finished:
“…has been watching this entire conversation.””
The car door opened.
A man stepped out.
Vanessa whispered his name.
And this time…
May you like
everyone heard it.
“Adrian.””
