Chapter 13: The Person in the Photograph

The photograph shook in Daniel’s hand.

Not because of the image.

Because of what it meant.

Someone had been inside the records room.

Someone had been close enough to take a picture of me.

And I had never noticed.

I stared at the screen.

The person standing behind me was partially hidden in the shadows, but I knew that posture.

That face.

That expression.

“Impossible.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You know him?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because my mind was fighting with what my eyes were seeing.

The person behind me was Michael Voss.

The man everyone believed had disappeared after being accused of stealing from the foundation.

The man who was supposed to have lost everything.

The man who had been the first victim of Vanessa’s lies.

But Michael was alive.

And he had been watching me.

Richard stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

I handed him the phone.

His face changed immediately.

“Michael?””

Vanessa went completely still.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas stared at the picture.

His expression was filled with confusion.

“I thought…”

He stopped.

“What?””

Thomas looked away.

“I thought he was dead.””

The words sent another wave through the room.

Dead.

Another lie.

Another secret.

I looked at Eleanor.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at Vanessa.

For once, she looked as lost as everyone else.

“I swear,” she whispered.

“I didn’t know.””

I wanted to believe that.

But trust had become a dangerous thing.

Daniel took his phone back.

“The message says we already found the truth.””

He looked at the photograph again.

“Maybe Michael wants us to find him.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

Everyone turned.

“You think he’s helping?””

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian walked closer.

“Michael Voss was never as innocent as everyone believed.””

Thomas immediately responded.

“That’s a lie.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Is it?””

The room became tense.

Adrian continued.

“You all remember Michael as the loyal employee.””

He looked at Richard.

“The man who discovered corruption.””

Then he looked at me.

“But nobody asks why he was so close to the money in the first place.””

I felt anger rise.

“My father trusted him.””

“Yes.””

Adrian nodded.

“And that’s exactly why he was dangerous.””

Daniel frowned.

“Careful.””

Adrian smiled.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

He pointed toward the photograph.

“Michael Voss didn’t disappear because Vanessa destroyed him.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What are you talking about?””

“He disappeared because he knew too much.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Thomas.

“Is that true?””

Thomas hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Thomas.””

He sighed.

“Michael did know things.””

“Like what?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Like the fact that your father wasn’t investigating Vanessa.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who was he investigating?””

Thomas looked at Richard.

Richard immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Richard looked terrified.

“I told him to stop.””

My voice became quiet.

“Stop investigating who?””

Richard closed his eyes.

Then he answered.

“My business partners.””

The room froze.

“Your partners?””

Richard nodded.

“The people who helped build the foundation.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Investors.””

“Yes.””

Thomas whispered.

“They weren’t donating money.””

A chill moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“They were laundering it.””

Everything suddenly connected.

The stolen funds.

The fake accounts.

The pressure.

Vanessa.

Michael.

My father.

All of it.

But one question remained.

“Why did my father die?””

Nobody answered.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

A weak voice.

An old voice.

“Because he was about to expose them.””

Everyone turned.

Michael Voss stood there.

Alive.

Older.

But alive.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Michael…”

He looked at her.

There was no anger.

Only disappointment.

“I waited five years to hear you admit the truth.””

She looked away.

Michael walked toward me.

“I’m sorry, Emma.””

I couldn’t move.

“You were there.””

He nodded.

“The night your father died.””

My heart shattered.

“Tell me what happened.””

Michael looked at everyone.

Then at me.

“He didn’t have a heart attack.””

May you like

Silence.

“He was poisoned.””
