Chapter 6: The Person Behind Vanessa

Nobody asked Vanessa a question.

They didn’t need to.

Her silence answered one.

I watched her face carefully.

The fear.

The anger.

The calculation.

She was searching for a way out.

People like Vanessa always did.

“Emma,” Richard said quietly.

I looked at him.

“Don’t let her manipulate you.””

I almost laughed.

The strange thing was, I wasn’t angry anymore.

I was past anger.

I wanted the truth.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“Who gave the order?””

Her expression hardened.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“The message refers to your father’s death.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved quickly.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

Daniel saw it too.

“You know something.””

“No.””

“You reacted before I explained the message.””

She said nothing.

The guests started whispering.

Vanessa looked around.

“Everyone here wants to believe I’m the villain.””

Nobody answered.

“Fine.””

She pointed at Eleanor.

“But ask her why she disappeared.””

Eleanor’s face changed.

Vanessa smiled.

“There’s a reason she left.””

Richard looked at his ex-wife.

“What is she talking about?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she looked at me.

“The night your father died…”

My heart tightened.

“What about it?””

Eleanor took a breath.

“I was there.””

The words hit like a wave.

“You were what?””

“I went to see him.””

“Why?””

“To warn him.””

The terrace became silent.

“Warn him about what?””

Eleanor looked at Vanessa.

“About my daughter.””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“Mom.””

But Eleanor continued.

“Your father had discovered everything. He was going to expose Vanessa publicly.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Then why didn’t he?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Because someone stopped him.””

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Someone inside this family.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

But Vanessa didn’t look surprised.

She looked angry.

Like someone had revealed a secret she was trying to protect.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You abandoned me.””

“Yes.””

The answer stunned her.

“I did.””

Eleanor’s voice broke.

“Because after your father died, I found out you weren’t just hiding money.””

She looked at her daughter.

“You were hiding the truth.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with rage.

“You have no idea what happened that night.””

“Then tell us.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she knew.

Everyone was waiting.

The woman who controlled rooms with a single look was now trapped by one question.

What happened that night?

Then the black SUV outside started moving again.

Another person stepped out.

A man.

Older.

Carrying a cane.

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

His face changed.

“No…”

I turned.

“Who is that?””

Daniel whispered the name.

A name I had never heard before.

But Vanessa had.

Because the moment she saw him, all the blood drained from her face.

“Impossible.””

The man walked onto the terrace.

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

And said:

“Emma Hayes…”

He paused.

“I owe your father an apology.””

May you like

My breath stopped.

“Because I was the last person who spoke to him before he died.””
