Chapter 10: The Letter My Father Never Sent
The envelope shook in Adrian’s hand.
Not because he was nervous.
Because he knew exactly what it represented.
Years of silence.
Years of unanswered questions.
Years of me believing my father left this world without saying goodbye.
I stared at the handwriting.
The curve of the letters.
The way he always pressed harder on certain words.
It was him.
My father.
“Give it to me.””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
Adrian looked at me.
“Do you really want to read it?””
The question angered me.
“What kind of question is that?””
“A fair one.””
He held the envelope tighter.
“Because after you read this, you won’t be able to pretend your father was only a victim.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Not Vanessa.
Not Richard.
Not Eleanor.
Only Adrian.
“Your father was not just investigating the Carlisle Foundation.””
He looked around.
“He was building a case.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“A case against who?””
Adrian smiled.
“That depends on who you believe the enemy was.””
I reached out my hand.
“Enough.””
For the first time, Adrian hesitated.
Then he gave me the envelope.
The moment it touched my fingers, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.
A connection.
A piece of him.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
Only one.
My eyes moved across the first line.
*Emma, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you from the truth.*
My breath caught.
I kept reading.
*I spent my life believing honesty could fix anything. I was wrong. Sometimes honesty only makes dangerous people angry.*
The words blurred.
I forced myself to continue.
*You will hear many versions of what happened. Some people will tell you I was betrayed. Some will tell you I made mistakes. Both are true.*
I swallowed.
*But I need you to know one thing: I never stopped fighting for what was right.*
A tear slipped down before I could stop it.
I hated that.
I hated that even after everything, his words still had that power.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my hands froze.
*The person who caused my downfall is not the person you think. Vanessa made terrible choices, but she was not the beginning. She was only a door someone else walked through.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
I lowered the letter.
“Who?””
Adrian stared at me.
“You already know.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“Tell me.””
Adrian looked at Richard.
Richard’s face changed.
Because he understood.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Richard looked at Adrian.
“You’re lying.””
Adrian smiled.
“Am I?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is it?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Eleanor.
And Eleanor looked away.
My stomach dropped.
“Eleanor?””
She closed her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.””
My heart started racing.
“Tell me what?””
She looked at me.
“That your father wasn’t destroyed by one person.””
The terrace went silent.
“He was destroyed by a system.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“It’s worse.””
Richard looked at his former wife.
“What are you saying?””
Eleanor turned toward him.
“I’m saying Vanessa wasn’t the only one who knew.””
Richard’s face changed.
“Eleanor…”
“You knew too.””
The words hit harder than anything else that night.
Nobody moved.
I looked at Richard.
The man everyone respected.
The man who built a foundation on his name.
The man who had walked outside tonight pretending he was shocked.
“You knew?””
Richard looked at me.
“Emma, listen—”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You knew my father was investigating.””
He didn’t answer.
“You knew he was in danger.””
His silence was enough.
I stepped backward.
All this time, I thought Vanessa was the person who destroyed my father’s life.
But maybe she was only one piece.
Richard looked broken.
“I thought I could handle it.””
I stared at him.
“You thought?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I underestimated what people were willing to do.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“And that was always your problem, Father.””
Richard looked at him.
“Leave.””
“No.””
Adrian pointed at me.
“She deserves the truth.””
A sudden sound interrupted us.
A loud crash came from inside the mansion.
Everyone turned.
Security rushed toward the doors.
Daniel looked concerned.
“What was that?””
A guard appeared seconds later.
His face was pale.
“Mr. Carlisle…”
Richard stepped forward.
“What happened?””
The guard swallowed.
“The foundation records room.””
A pause.
“It’s been emptied.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
The guard looked toward me.
“And there was one message left behind.””
Nobody spoke.
“What message?”” Richard asked.
The guard hesitated.
Then answered.
“It said…”
May you like
He looked at me.
“Emma Hayes was never supposed to find the truth.””
