Chapter 11: The Hidden Account
The records room smelled like smoke.
Not from a fire.
From something worse.
Panic.
Someone had gone through every cabinet, every drawer, every locked container.
Years of financial records were scattered across the floor.
The same people who had ignored me in the fountain now stood frozen, realizing this wasn’t just a family scandal.
Someone was desperate.
Daniel picked up a torn document.
“They were looking for something specific.””
I walked through the room slowly.
“What?””
He looked at the empty shelves.
“Something your father left behind.””
Adrian stood near the doorway.
“I told you.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The letter wasn’t the only thing.””
Richard’s voice was cold.
“What else did you take?””
Adrian smiled.
“You still think it was me?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Adrian walked toward the destroyed shelves.
“Whoever did this wasn’t trying to hide the money.””
He picked up a broken lock.
“They were trying to hide the proof.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You always loved pretending you were smarter than everyone.””
Adrian looked at her.
“And you always loved pretending you were innocent.””
Her face tightened.
The two of them looked like they had spent years fighting the same war.
A war nobody else knew existed.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“You knew about the records room?””
She looked at me.
“No.””
“Then why do you look scared?””
She didn’t answer.
That was when I noticed something.
Her fear wasn’t about herself.
It was about someone else.
“Who are you afraid of?””
Vanessa looked away.
Nobody spoke.
Then she whispered:
“Someone who doesn’t forgive mistakes.””
The room became colder.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I don’t know his real name.””
Richard looked shocked.
“You’re telling us there’s another person?””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course there is.””
She looked at me.
“You thought I was the monster.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“But monsters don’t appear from nowhere.””
I didn’t respond.
Because part of me hated that she was right.
People like Vanessa didn’t become cruel overnight.
They were shaped.
Broken.
Encouraged.
Sometimes by other broken people.
“Tell us everything,” Richard said.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You want the truth now?””
“Yes.””
She smiled sadly.
“Five years too late.””
Nobody argued.
Vanessa walked to the window.
“When Michael discovered the accounts, I thought I could fix it.””
Daniel frowned.
“You said you were afraid.””
“I was.””
She looked outside.
“Because the person behind it had access to everything.””
“What everything?””
“Bank accounts. Security records. Private information.””
She turned back.
“He knew where everyone was. He knew what everyone feared.””
Thomas quietly said:
“The man in the shadows.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You knew about him.””
Thomas nodded.
“I suspected.””
“Then why didn’t you stop him?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Because I was trying to survive.””
That answer hurt.
Because everyone in this room had a reason.
Everyone had an excuse.
And people like my father paid the price.
Daniel’s phone suddenly buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
Then immediately locked it.
I noticed.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Nothing.””
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
The expression on his face told me everything.
“Someone accessed your father’s old case file.””
My heart dropped.
“Who?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The access came from inside this building.””
Everyone froze.
Richard looked around.
“But nobody has access anymore.””
Daniel stared at him.
“That’s not true.””
A pause.
“Someone still does.””
He turned the phone around.
On the screen was the login record.
A username.
One name.
Everyone recognized it.
Because it belonged to the person nobody had suspected.
Eleanor whispered:
“No…”
I looked at the screen.
And felt the truth break apart again.
