Chapter 5: The Last Letter

The words followed me long after Daniel said them.

A file connected to my father.

For years, I believed I knew everything about his final days.

I was wrong.

Daniel pulled a small envelope from his briefcase.

Not a copy.

Not a report.

An actual envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

My name was written across the front.

Emma Hayes.

My hands started shaking.

“Where did you get that?””

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“She kept it safe.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

Eleanor looked away.

“Because your father asked me to.””

The world seemed to pause.

“My father knew you?””

She nodded slowly.

“Your father was the most honest man I ever met.””

Vanessa laughed suddenly.

A cold, empty sound.

“You’re really going to stand here and pretend you’re innocent?””

Eleanor looked at her.

“I never said I was.””

That surprised everyone.

Even me.

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor looked at the crowd.

“I made mistakes.””

She took a breath.

“Five years ago, when I discovered what Vanessa had done, I should have gone straight to the authorities.””

“Why didn’t you?”” Richard asked.

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Because she was my daughter.””

No one spoke.

“And that was my failure.””

She looked at me.

“I thought I could fix it quietly. I thought I could protect my family and still protect the truth.””

Her voice became softer.

“I was wrong.””

I looked at the envelope.

“And my father?””

Eleanor nodded.

“He knew I was collecting evidence.””

She paused.

“He knew Vanessa was trying to blame Michael.””

I swallowed.

“What happened?””

Eleanor looked at Richard.

Then back at me.

“Your father found the final piece of evidence.””

Daniel opened another folder.

“An original transaction record.””

He showed Richard a document.

“The missing money wasn’t just transferred through fake companies. It was used to purchase private assets under Vanessa’s control.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You found that?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

She stepped backward.

“No.””

The confidence was gone.

She wasn’t a billionaire heiress anymore.

She was someone watching her entire world collapse.

Richard looked at his daughter.

“Why?””

The question was quiet.

Almost broken.

“Why would you do this?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward him.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

“Try me.””

She laughed.

“You built everything. Everyone respected you. Everyone listened to you.””

Her voice rose.

“But I was always your daughter.””

Richard looked hurt.

“What does that mean?””

“It means nobody ever saw me.””

The crowd listened.

For a moment, Vanessa almost looked human.

Almost.

“I spent my entire life standing behind your name.””

Richard shook his head.

“That doesn’t excuse stealing.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“But people like Emma don’t understand.””

My jaw tightened.

“What don’t I understand?””

She pointed at my uniform.

“You think being good is enough.””

The words hung in the air.

“You think doing the right thing means the world rewards you.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“I learned a long time ago the world doesn’t reward kindness.””

I stepped closer.

“But that doesn’t mean you have to become cruel.””

For the first time, Vanessa had no answer.

Daniel looked down at his phone.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I noticed immediately.

“What is it?””

He hesitated.

Then handed me the phone.

On the screen was a message.

A photo.

A photo of my father.

Taken the night before he died.

My heart stopped.

Underneath the image was one sentence.

*He didn’t die knowing the truth. Someone made sure he never found out.*

I looked up.

“Who sent this?””

Daniel checked the number.

His face became serious.

“I don’t know.””

Another message appeared.

This time, everyone saw it.

*Ask Vanessa who gave the order.*

The entire terrace turned toward her.

And Vanessa Carlisle went completely silent.
