Chapter 14: The Truth Beneath the Lies

Nobody breathed.

The entire room seemed frozen.

My father.

Poisoned.

The word repeated in my head until it stopped sounding real.

“No.””

Michael looked at me.

“I wish I was wrong.””

I shook my head.

“My father died at home.””

“Yes.””

“From a heart attack.””

“That’s what everyone was told.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Who told them?””

Michael looked toward Richard.

Richard’s face went pale.

“Don’t.””

Michael’s eyes hardened.

“You owe her the truth.””

Richard looked broken.

“I was trying to protect her.””

I turned toward him.

“Protect me?””

My voice rose.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I stepped closer.

“But all of you protected me by lying.””

Nobody answered.

Michael lowered his voice.

“Your father knew he was close to exposing everything.””

Daniel asked:

“Who poisoned him?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“Not me.””

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

That surprised everyone.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You believe me?””

“No.””

The answer hurt.

“I believe you weren’t smart enough to plan it.””

Her face tightened.

But she didn’t argue.

Michael continued.

“The person behind it was someone with access.””

“Access to what?”” Daniel asked.

“Everything.””

Michael looked at Richard.

“The foundation. The accounts. The security system.””

Richard whispered:

“No…”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Who?””

Michael reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small recorder.

“I recorded a conversation five years ago.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What conversation?””

Michael pressed a button.

A voice filled the room.

Richard Carlisle’s voice.

“We need to make sure Emma never finds out.””

My heart stopped.

The room exploded with whispers.

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Michael stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

I stared at Richard.

“What did you mean?””

Richard looked devastated.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

“Then explain.””

He struggled.

“I found out there was a threat against you.””

“A threat?””

“Yes.””

“From who?””

Richard looked at Adrian.

The room became silent.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You.””

Everyone turned.

Richard’s voice broke.

“You were angry. You blamed me for everything.””

Adrian laughed.

“So you blamed me.””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“I tried to protect my family.””

Michael interrupted.

“But you protected the wrong people.””

Richard looked down.

Because he knew.

Michael turned to me.

“Your father discovered Adrian was using the foundation.””

Adrian’s face remained calm.

Too calm.

“You have no proof.””

Michael smiled sadly.

“I do.””

He held up the recorder.

Adrian looked at it.

Then laughed.

“You think an old recording scares me?””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“It’s not for you.””

He looked at Daniel.

“It’s for the police.””

Only then did Adrian’s confidence weaken.

A little.

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

Adrian moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He grabbed a nearby glass and threw it against the wall.

The crash shocked everyone.

Security rushed in.

Adrian stepped backward.

“You still don’t understand.””

Nobody moved.

He looked at me.

“This was never about money.””

I stared at him.

“Then what was it about?””

His smile returned.

“Control.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“You thought you were building an empire.””

Then at Richard.

“You thought you were protecting a legacy.””

Finally, he looked at me.

“But your father understood.””

A pause.

“He knew the only thing more valuable than money…”

He stepped toward the door.

“…was the truth.””

Security blocked his path.

For the first time, Adrian looked trapped.

But he wasn’t afraid.

Because before leaving, he said one final thing.

“Ask Michael why he really disappeared.””

May you like

Everyone looked at Michael.

And Michael looked away.
