Chapter 12: The Lie I Was Living
The room went silent.
I stared at the screen.
My name.
My identity.
My father’s case file.
All connected together.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“Emma, listen to me.””
“No.””
I looked at everyone.
“You all think I did this?””
Nobody answered quickly enough.
That hurt more than an accusation.
Because hesitation was its own kind of answer.
Richard stepped forward.
“I don’t believe you did.””
“But you’re wondering.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Explain.””
He studied the screen.
“The access was made with credentials linked to your father’s old account.””
“But I don’t have those.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
Daniel looked at Thomas.
Thomas looked at Eleanor.
And Eleanor looked at me.
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Eleanor slowly spoke.
“Your father left something with me.””
“What?””
“A backup key.””
I stared at her.
“A key to what?””
She looked devastated.
“Everything.””
The answer made no sense.
My father never told me about hidden files.
Secret accounts.
Backup keys.
Why?
Why would he hide this from me?
Thomas stepped forward.
“Because he was protecting you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“But all I see is that everyone knew the truth except me.””
Nobody responded.
Because it was true.
I spent five years mourning a man whose final battle I knew nothing about.
I thought I understood his life.
I didn’t.
I only knew the version he allowed me to see.
Adrian watched me carefully.
“Your father loved you.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t.””
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t use my father’s love to excuse everyone’s lies.””
For the first time, Adrian had no clever response.
Daniel stepped beside me.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He showed me another part of the access record.
The timestamp.
The login happened twenty minutes before the gala began.
Before Vanessa pushed me.
Before Daniel arrived.
Before anyone knew I was going to expose the truth.
Someone had already accessed my father’s file.
Someone knew I was coming.
My skin went cold.
“They knew.””
Richard frowned.
“Who?””
I looked around the room.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had lied.
Then I noticed something.
A small detail.
Something I should have seen earlier.
The destroyed records room.
The missing files.
The message.
The access.
It wasn’t random.
Someone wasn’t trying to hide the past.
They were trying to control the future.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where is the original file?””
He frowned.
“What?””
“The one my father created.””
“The evidence?””
“Yes.””
He hesitated.
“Emma…”
“Where is it?””
Thomas slowly looked toward the empty shelves.
Then he whispered:
“There was never a file.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your father never trusted paper.””
My heart raced.
“Then where did he keep the truth?””
Thomas stared at the fountain outside.
The same fountain where this entire night began.
Then he said:
“Somewhere Vanessa would never think to look.””
A notification appeared on Daniel’s phone.
He read it.
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“It’s from an unknown number.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does it say?””
Daniel turned the phone around.
A single sentence appeared.
*Stop searching for your father’s truth, Emma. You already found it.*
Below the message was a photograph.
A photograph taken moments ago.
Of me.
Standing inside the records room.
But I wasn’t alone.
Behind me…
May you like
was someone watching.
And I recognized the person immediately.
