Chapter 7: The Graveyard Confession
The cemetery was almost empty when we arrived.
The sky was gray, and the wind moved through the rows of headstones like whispers.
Daniel walked ahead of us.
He hadn’t said a word during the drive.
Not one.
I sat in the passenger seat while Claire stayed in the back, staring out the window.
She looked nothing like the woman from the baby shower.
The woman who had smiled for pictures.
The woman who had accepted congratulations.
The woman who had let everyone place their hands on a stomach that wasn’t real.
When we reached the cemetery, Daniel’s mother was already there.
Linda Carter stood beside a large stone monument, holding a folder against her chest.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
“Mom,” Daniel said.
Linda turned.
“I knew you’d come.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You did this.””
Linda looked at her.
“I prevented my son from losing everything.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You don’t get to call that prevention.””
“You don’t understand.””
“No, Mom. I understand perfectly.””
He pointed toward the folder.
“What is that?””
Linda held it tighter.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She looked at Claire.
“That she was never planning to tell you the truth.””
Claire’s eyes filled with anger.
“You forced me into this.””
Linda laughed quietly.
“Forced?””
“You threatened me.””
“I gave you a solution.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Nobody answered.
The wind moved through the trees.
Finally, Claire spoke.
“Your mother found out I couldn’t get pregnant.””
Daniel looked at Linda.
“And?””
“She told me if you found out, you would leave me.””
Linda shook her head.
“Because he deserved someone who could give him a family.””
Daniel looked wounded.
“Mom.””
But Linda continued.
“She said she would help me.””
Daniel stared.
“Help you?””
Claire nodded.
“She found Melissa’s baby.””
My heart tightened.
The name still felt unreal.
Melissa.
A woman who was gone but somehow still at the center of everyone’s secrets.
Linda opened the folder.
“She found the adoption paperwork.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You had access to that?””
“I had connections.””
The way she said it made my skin crawl.
Claire looked at the ground.
“She told me it was the perfect answer.””
“A perfect answer?”” Daniel repeated.
Linda looked at him.
“You wanted a child.””
“That doesn’t mean I wanted a lie.””
Her expression softened.
“People say that now.””
Daniel froze.
“What does that mean?””
Linda looked away.
“When Melissa died, everyone thought the baby would go into foster care.””
I stepped closer.
“But he didn’t?””
“No.””
Linda opened the folder.
“Because someone took him.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Someone?””
Claire whispered:
“Me.””
Silence.
Daniel stared at his wife.
“You took him?””
“I raised him.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was there when he came home from the hospital.””
Daniel looked like he couldn’t process the words.
“You knew this whole time?””
“Yes.””
“And you still lied?””
“I was afraid.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. You were afraid of losing me.””
Claire didn’t deny it.
Linda stepped forward.
“And that’s why I helped.””
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“You helped her steal my life.””
Linda’s face changed.
“I helped you become a father.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You helped yourself become a grandmother.””
That hit her.
For the first time, Linda looked uncertain.
Then she handed him the folder.
“Read the last page.””
Daniel opened it.
His eyes moved across the paper.
Then he stopped.
“What is this?””
I walked closer.
Daniel’s hands were shaking.
“What?””
He looked at Claire.
“This isn’t an adoption agreement.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“What?””
Daniel turned the paper around.
At the bottom was a signature.
Not Claire’s.
Not Melissa’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone who had no legal right to sign.
Linda immediately stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Daniel pulled it away.
“No.””
He looked at his mother.
“Who signed this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire whispered:
“I thought it was handled.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Handled by who?””
Her silence was the answer.
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t Daniel’s.
It wasn’t Claire’s.
It was Linda’s.
She looked at the screen.
And her face changed.
May you like
Because the caller’s name was impossible.
*Melissa Carter.*
