The Belly That Wasn’t / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Baby Nobody Knew

Daniel came home with me that night.

He couldn’t stay at his house.

Not after everything he learned.

Sophie noticed immediately.

Kids always do.

She came downstairs holding her stuffed rabbit and looked at Daniel sitting silently on the couch.

“Uncle Danny?””

He looked up.

“Yeah, sweetheart?””

“Are you sad?””

Daniel forced a smile.

“A little.””

She climbed beside him.

“Because Claire yelled?””

His face changed.

“She didn’t yell.””

Sophie looked confused.

“She looked scary.””

I gently touched her shoulder.

“Sophie, go get ready for bed.””

“But Uncle Danny is sad.””

“I know.””

She hugged him before walking upstairs.

After she disappeared, Daniel covered his face with his hands.

“She knew.””

“Who?””

“Sophie.””

“What do you mean?””

“She knew something was wrong before any of us.””

I sat beside him.

“Kids notice things.””

He shook his head.

“No. She noticed the truth.””

The next morning, we met Claire at a quiet coffee shop.

She arrived twenty minutes late.

She looked exhausted.

No makeup.

No perfect smile.

No fake confidence.

Just a woman who had finally run out of places to hide.

Daniel didn’t stand.

“Tell me everything.””

Claire sat across from him.

“I’m sorry.””

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

“Did you ever plan on telling me?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“When?””

Claire swallowed.

“After the baby was born.””

Daniel laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“You were going to let me believe I was the father until then?””

“I was going to explain.””

“You were going to explain what?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“That I wanted to give you the family you always dreamed about.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“You stole my chance to choose.””

She looked away.

The words hurt because they were true.

I finally spoke.

“Why didn’t you tell him about Melissa?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because I knew what people would think.””

“What would they think?””

“That I was replacing my sister.””

The table went silent.

Claire wiped her eyes.

“Melissa died three days after giving birth.””

Her voice became quieter.

“She had complications. Nobody expected it.””

Daniel stared at her.

“And the baby?””

“Her son was healthy.””

“Your nephew.””

Claire nodded.

“I helped take care of him after she died.””

“And then?””

Claire looked at him.

“Then I found out I couldn’t have children.””

Daniel looked away.

“So you decided to pretend.””

“I decided to protect what I had.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You decided to control me.””

Claire started crying.

“I was scared.””

“Everyone is scared. That doesn’t give you permission to build a fake life.””

For the first time, Claire didn’t argue.

She just sat there.

Broken.

But something still bothered me.

Something didn’t fit.

I looked at her.

“If the baby was Melissa’s, why did you need the fake belly?””

Claire froze.

A strange expression crossed her face.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“I didn’t buy it.””

Daniel and I exchanged a look.

“What?””

Claire lowered her voice.

“I found it in my house.””

I stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

She looked toward the window.

“I wasn’t the only person lying.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who else knew?””

Claire’s hands started shaking.

“My husband’s mother.””

Daniel frowned.

“My mom?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“She helped me create the story.””

Daniel stood up.

“What?””

But before Claire could answer, her phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She turned the phone around.

It was a message from an unknown number.
