Chapter 13: The Last File
Daniel stared at the flash drive in his mother’s hand.
For the first time since we entered the basement, Linda looked afraid.
Not guilty.
Not ashamed.
Afraid.
And that told me something.
Whatever was on that drive was bigger than everything we already knew.
“Give it to me,” Daniel said.
Linda tightened her grip.
“No.””
“Mom.””
“You don’t understand what you’re asking for.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I’ve spent my entire life believing my family was honest.””
His voice shook.
“I believed my father was a good man. I believed you protected me. I believed Claire loved me enough to tell me the truth.””
He pointed at the boxes.
“But every single person I trusted was hiding something.””
Linda looked away.
“I did what I had to do.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You did what you wanted.””
Claire stepped closer.
“Linda, where is Melissa?””
Linda looked at her.
“You still care about her?””
Claire’s face hardened.
“She lost her child.””
“She abandoned him.””
“No,” Claire whispered.
“She lost everything.””
For a moment, Linda’s expression changed.
Almost like she remembered something.
Then it disappeared.
“You are all too emotional.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You stole a woman’s baby and you’re calling us emotional?””
Linda looked at me.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell it.””
She looked at the flash drive.
“That’s what this is.””
Daniel held out his hand.
“Give it to me.””
Slowly, Linda placed it in his palm.
But before he could turn away, she said:
“Your father didn’t pay Melissa to disappear.””
Daniel froze.
“Then why?””
Linda looked directly at him.
“He paid her because he was afraid she would tell you the truth.””
“What truth?””
She swallowed.
“The baby was never your nephew.””
Silence.
Claire looked confused.
“What?””
Linda continued.
“Melissa’s husband wasn’t the father.””
Daniel stared.
“What are you saying?””
Linda’s voice became quieter.
“Your father was.””
The world seemed to stop.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked like he had been physically hit.
“No.””
Linda shook her head.
“I found out after the baby was born.””
Claire stepped back.
“Daniel’s father was the baby’s father?””
Linda nodded.
“And Melissa’s husband knew.””
The room went silent.
I understood then.
The money.
The secrecy.
The panic.
It wasn’t just about a baby.
It was about protecting a family name.
Daniel’s hands shook as he held the flash drive.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you helped cover it up?””
“I protected you.””
“No.””
He looked at her with tears in his eyes.
“You protected a reputation.””
Linda didn’t argue.
Because she couldn’t.
Daniel inserted the drive into his laptop.
A single folder appeared.
*MELISSA — FINAL STATEMENT*
He opened it.
A video file.
The screen showed Melissa sitting in a small room.
She looked older.
Tired.
But alive.
Daniel pressed play.
Her voice filled the basement.
“If you’re watching this, then Linda finally gave you the truth.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
Melissa continued.
“I wanted to tell you myself, Daniel. I tried.””
The video shook slightly.
“I tried so many times.””
Melissa looked down.
“But your mother made sure I couldn’t.””
Daniel covered his mouth.
Melissa continued.
“Your father was the baby’s biological father. He made mistakes. He hurt people. But the baby was innocent.””
A tear fell down Daniel’s face.
“He was my son.””
The video paused for a second.
Then Melissa said:
“His name is Noah.””
Everyone froze.
Noah.
The name felt real.
Not a secret.
Not a document.
A child.
Melissa looked into the camera.
“And there is something else you need to know.””
She took a breath.
“Your father wasn’t the only one who knew.””
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Daniel stared.
“What else?””
Then another file appeared.
A file that had not been there before.
Created today.
