Chapter 1: The Baby Shower Secret
“Mommy, there’s no baby in there.””
My four-year-old daughter Sophie said it loud enough for the entire private dining room to hear.
The laughter around the baby shower disappeared like someone had turned off the music.
A moment earlier, everyone had been smiling, holding tiny blue-and-white cupcakes, and congratulating my brother Daniel and his wife Claire on their first child. Now every face in the room had turned toward my little girl, who was pointing directly at Claire’s stomach.
Daniel had rented the back room of an upscale Dallas restaurant for the celebration. He had spent weeks planning every detail. The decorations were perfect.
The flowers matched the invitations. A giant wooden sign behind the dessert table read: “Baby Carter Arriving Soon.””
Daniel stood beside Claire with one hand around her waist, beaming like the happiest man alive.
“You’re going to have to explain that one, Sophie,” my aunt joked nervously.
But Sophie didn’t smile.
She just looked confused.
“She doesn’t have a baby in there,” my daughter repeated.
I immediately walked over and lowered myself beside her.
“Sophie, honey, what makes you think that?””
She grabbed my hand.
“I saw it.””
Claire’s smile faded.
She walked closer and crouched down in front of Sophie.
“Sweetheart,” Claire said softly, “you shouldn’t say things like that.””
Sophie looked at the floor.
“I’m not lying.””
Claire tilted her head.
“Then why would you say something so mean at my baby shower?””
My daughter stepped behind my legs and held onto my dress.
“She put a pillow there.””
The room went silent.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“A pillow?””
Claire stood up quickly.
“Daniel, don’t.””
“I’m just asking what she means.””
Claire laughed, but it sounded forced.
“She’s four years old. She probably misunderstood something.””
Sophie shook her head.
“No. It was red.””
I looked at Claire.
Something about the way she immediately dismissed Sophie bothered me.
Not because I believed every strange thing a child said. Four-year-olds could misunderstand situations. They could mix dreams with reality.
But Sophie was not usually careless with her words.
She noticed everything.
The smallest scratch on a table.
A missing stuffed animal.
A different perfume on someone’s coat.
I placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Sweetheart, tell me what happened.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Maybe this isn’t the time.””
“Why?”” Daniel asked.
She looked at him.
“Because you’re letting a child accuse me in front of everyone.””
Nobody spoke.
I took a breath.
“Sophie, where did you see the pillow?””
“In the bathroom.””
A few relatives exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Daniel’s eyebrows tightened.
“The bathroom?””
Sophie nodded.
“I went in there after Mommy.””
I remembered that moment. Earlier, I had taken Sophie to wash her hands before the party started. Claire had walked in while we were there.
At the time, nothing seemed unusual.
Sophie continued.
“Claire lifted her dress.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at her.
She immediately corrected herself.
“I mean… stop encouraging this.””
But Sophie kept going.
“She put the pillow under her dress and pulled the straps.””
Daniel slowly removed his arm from Claire’s shoulder.
“Straps?””
Claire looked at him.
“Are you seriously questioning me because of this?””
“I’m asking what our niece saw.””
“She saw nothing. She’s confused.””
Sophie reached into the pocket of her little cardigan.
“I picked this up for her.””
She pulled out a small folded piece of clear plastic.
Claire’s eyes locked onto it.
For the first time all afternoon, she looked afraid.
“Where did you get that?”” Claire asked.
Sophie held it out.
“You dropped it.””
Daniel took the plastic before Claire could.
He unfolded it slowly.
A white label was attached to the packaging.
His face changed as he read it.
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
He just stared.
Then he turned the label around.
Printed beneath the product image were the words:
*Artificial Pregnancy Belly — Adjustable Foam Insert.*
And in that moment, the baby shower became something else entirely.
Because everyone in that room realized the same terrifying question.
