The Belly That Wasn’t / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Child Who Had A Father

Nobody wanted to open the file.

That was the strange thing.

After everything we had uncovered, after all the lies and secrets, we were finally holding the last piece.

And none of us wanted to see it.

Because sometimes the truth is easier to chase than to face.

Daniel clicked.

The video started.

Melissa appeared again.

But this time she was crying.

“Daniel, if you’re seeing this, I need you to understand something.””

She looked directly at the camera.

“I never wanted revenge.””

Daniel sat frozen.

“I wanted my son to know where he came from.””

Claire whispered:

“Noah.””

Melissa continued.

“After I lost my husband, I was broken. Your father helped me financially, but when he realized the truth could destroy his family, he chose silence.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Linda helped him.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

But Linda didn’t react.

“She took Noah because she believed she was saving the Carter family.””

Melissa’s voice cracked.

“But she didn’t save anything.””

A pause.

“She destroyed every person involved.””

The video changed.

A photograph appeared.

A little boy.

Around eight months old.

Laughing.

Healthy.

Alive.

Daniel stared.

“That’s him.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Melissa continued.

“Noah was placed with a temporary caregiver while the legal process was investigated.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Temporary?””

Melissa nodded.

“I fought for him.””

The video continued.

“But I was never allowed to tell the full story.””

Another document appeared.

A court record.

Daniel leaned closer.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

I looked.

The document showed a recent ruling.

Noah’s custody had been reviewed.

And the name listed as temporary guardian was:

*Daniel Carter.*

My heart stopped.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“You knew?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

But then she saw another page.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

Daniel picked it up.

A letter.

Written by Linda.

A letter asking the court to place Noah with Daniel if the truth was ever revealed.

Claire started crying.

“She knew she was wrong.””

Linda looked away.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not powerful.

Not controlling.

Just tired.

“I was trying to fix it.””

Daniel turned.

“You don’t fix a life by destroying it.””

Linda nodded.

“I know.””

The basement became quiet.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His expression changed.

“Where?””

He listened.

Then stood.

“Okay. We’re coming.””

He ended the call.

“Who was it?””

He looked at us.

“The hospital.””

Claire’s face went pale.

“What happened?””

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

“They found Melissa.””

Everyone froze.

“Is she okay?””

He hesitated.

“She was injured.””

“How?””

Daniel looked toward his mother.

“She was trying to get away.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“She left one message for me.””

“What message?””

He looked down.

“She said she didn’t need me to forgive her.””

A pause.

“She needed me to protect Noah.””

The hospital room was quiet.

Melissa looked smaller than I expected.

Not weak.

Just exhausted.

When Daniel walked in, she started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel stood beside the bed.

“For what?””

“For all of this.””

He shook his head.

“You lost your son.””

“I lost years.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I know.””

Melissa reached for his hand.

“Do you hate me?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“No.””

A small smile appeared.

“Why?””

“Because everyone else lied to me.””

He looked toward the baby picture beside her bed.

“But you were trying to tell me the truth.””

Melissa cried.

Then she said:

“There’s one thing you still don’t know.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She squeezed his hand.

“Your father left one final message.””

Daniel went still.

“Where?””

Melissa looked toward the door.

“Your mother has it.””

Everyone turned.

May you like

Because Linda was standing there.

Holding an envelope.
