Chapter 11: The Woman In The Photograph
Daniel didn’t speak for almost a full minute.
He just stared at the signature.
His mother’s name.
His father’s agreement.
Melissa’s payment.
Everything connected.
Everything pointed back to the same family.
“I don’t understand,” Daniel said.
Robert sighed.
“Your father and mother were afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That Melissa would expose them.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Expose them for what?””
The attorney walked to the old filing cabinet.
“Before Melissa got pregnant, your father invested in a company with her husband.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with a baby?””
Robert looked at me.
“Everything.””
He opened another file.
“Melissa’s husband discovered financial fraud.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Fraud?””
“Yes.””
“By my father?””
Robert didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
Daniel stepped back.
“My father stole money?””
“Your father made bad choices.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“He stole.””
Robert lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
The room felt heavier.
Claire looked sick.
“What happened to Melissa’s husband?””
Robert closed the folder.
“He was going to report it.””
“And?””
“He died.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared.
“Are you saying my father killed him?””
“No.””
Robert answered quickly.
“But he benefited from the silence afterward.””
The distinction did not make anyone feel better.
Daniel walked away from the desk.
“My entire family is built on lies.””
I wanted to say something.
Anything.
But there was nothing that could fix that sentence.
Then Robert handed Daniel another envelope.
“This is why I kept everything.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A recent photograph.
Taken months earlier.
Claire gasped.
Because it showed her.
Standing outside a hospital.
Holding a baby.
But she wasn’t alone.
Someone else was beside her.
A woman.
A woman we all recognized.
Linda.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“You said you didn’t know my mother was involved.””
Claire looked terrified.
“I didn’t.””
“Then explain this.””
She took the photo.
Her hands shook.
“I’ve never seen this.””
Robert spoke quietly.
“She wasn’t supposed to.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“The person who gave me this photo wanted me to know the truth.””
“Who?””
Robert hesitated.
Then he said:
“Melissa.””
Daniel stared.
“But Melissa was gone.””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
He looked toward the photograph.
“Melissa has been trying to expose your family for months.””
Claire sat down.
“She was watching us?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Robert answered:
“Because she believed someone was going to hurt her son.””
The words changed everything.
Daniel looked at the photo again.
“The baby.””
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
“My nephew.””
“Yes.””
Claire whispered:
“Where is he now?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice.
Weak.
Terrified.
“Daniel?””
He stood immediately.
“Melissa?””
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“I need you to listen carefully.””
Daniel looked around.
“What happened?””
Melissa whispered:
“They found me.””
His face changed.
“Who?””
The line crackled.
Then she said:
May you like
“Your mother.””
The call ended.
