Chapter 12: The Truth In The Basement
Daniel called back immediately.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Again.
Still nothing.
His hands were shaking.
“She knew where Melissa was.””
Nobody disagreed.
Because there was only one person who could have found her.
Linda.
The woman who had controlled every secret.
Every document.
Every story.
I looked at Daniel.
“What do we do?””
He grabbed his keys.
“We find my mother.””
Claire stood.
“I’m coming.””
Daniel looked at her.
For a moment, I thought he would refuse.
But then he nodded.
“Fine.””
The three of us drove to Linda’s house.
The entire way there, Daniel said nothing.
Claire sat in the back seat.
Crying silently.
When we arrived, the front door was unlocked.
That scared me more than a locked door would have.
“Mom?”” Daniel called.
No answer.
We stepped inside.
The house was perfectly clean.
Almost too clean.
Like someone had left in a hurry.
“Linda?”” Claire called.
Nothing.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A trail of papers leading toward the basement.
He picked one up.
Hospital records.
Melissa’s name.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“She was here.””
We followed the papers downstairs.
The basement was dark.
The light flickered when Daniel turned it on.
And then we saw it.
Boxes.
Dozens of them.
All labeled with dates.
Names.
Documents.
Daniel opened the nearest one.
Inside were photographs.
Melissa.
The baby.
Claire.
Linda.
A timeline of everything.
Claire covered her mouth.
“She was documenting us.””
“No,” Daniel said quietly.
He opened another box.
“She was controlling us.””
Inside were copies of messages.
Fake doctor appointments.
Financial records.
Even notes about what Claire should say during conversations.
One note caught my attention.
I picked it up.
It was written in Linda’s handwriting.
*Daniel must believe he is becoming a father.*
I felt sick.
Another line was underneath.
*Claire must never know the full truth.*
Daniel read it.
Then looked at Claire.
“She lied to you too.””
Claire wiped her tears.
“What?””
Daniel handed her the paper.
Claire read it.
Her face changed.
“No.””
She looked through the box faster.
“No, no, no.””
“What?””
She pulled out a document.
A birth certificate.
Daniel took it.
Then froze.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
I looked.
The baby’s name was listed.
The mother’s name:
Melissa Carter.
The father’s name:
Blank.
But underneath was another document.
A legal request.
A request for guardianship.
Filed by Linda.
And the date was important.
It was filed before Claire ever announced her pregnancy.
Claire stepped back.
“She planned this before I even knew.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.””
His voice was quiet.
“She never wanted you to be the mother.””
A sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard creaking.
Everyone froze.
Someone was in the house.
Daniel grabbed the nearest object.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
Then a voice came from the basement doorway.
A voice we knew.
“Daniel.””
We turned.
Linda stood there.
Her face was calm.
Almost peaceful.
But in her hand was a small object.
A flash drive.
“You finally found it.””
Daniel stared.
“Where is Melissa?””
Linda smiled faintly.
“That’s the wrong question.””
“What’s the right one?””
She looked at the boxes around us.
Then at Claire.
Then at Daniel.
“The right question is…”
May you like
She lifted the flash drive.
“…what will you do when you learn what your father really did to that baby?””
