Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew Everything

I left the boardroom without saying a word.

I couldn’t hear the voices behind me.

I couldn’t hear the arguments.

I couldn’t hear Richard calling my name.

All I could hear was Claire’s sentence repeating in my head.

The person who raised you.

My mother.

The woman who taught me honesty.

The woman who told me family was everything.

The woman who wrote a letter warning me about secrets.

How could she be part of the secret?

I returned to the Presidential Suite with Ethan.

He was sitting on the couch watching cartoons.

The moment he saw my face, he turned it off.

“Mom?””

I forced myself to smile.

“What?””

“You look sad.””

I sat beside him.

“I’m just thinking.””

“About Grandpa?””

I nodded.

Ethan was quiet for a moment.

Then he said something that surprised me.

“Maybe Grandpa made mistakes.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He shrugged.

“Everyone makes mistakes.””

His simple words hit me harder than any accusation.

Because he was right.

Maybe I had spent too much time trying to find someone to blame.

Maybe I needed to understand first.

After Ethan fell asleep, I returned to the old files.

I searched through everything.

Photographs.

Letters.

Documents.

Then I found something hidden inside the back cover of my mother’s box.

A small key.

Attached to it was a note.

For Amelia. When you are ready.

I stared at it.

Ready for what?

The next morning, I brought it to Daniel.

He immediately recognized it.

“Where did you find this?””

“My mother’s box.””

His face changed.

“There’s only one place that key belongs.””

“Where?””

He looked toward the hotel.

“The original Carter archive.””

I frowned.

“I thought that was destroyed.””

“So did everyone.””

Two hours later, we entered an old storage room beneath Sterling Crown.

The place smelled like dust and old paper.

Daniel unlocked a hidden door behind a shelf.

Inside was a small room.

And on the wall were hundreds of files.

My father had been keeping records.

Not digital copies.

Not company documents.

Personal evidence.

I walked toward the center table.

There was one folder waiting.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

The first page was a letter.

From my father.

My Amelia,

I know you will be angry when you learn the truth.

My eyes filled with tears.

I kept reading.

But anger is easier than understanding.

I turned the page.

The next sentence made my heart stop.

Your mother did not betray me.

I froze.

Then why had Claire said she did?

I continued.

She sacrificed everything to protect you.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does this mean?””

He stepped closer.

I read the final lines.

The person who changed the documents was not your mother.

It was someone who used her name.

My hands shook.

Then I saw the signature.

My father’s.

And underneath it was one final warning.

Never trust the person who appears when everything falls apart.

At that exact moment, the archive door slowly opened.

A shadow appeared.

A familiar voice spoke.

“Amelia.””

I turned.

And my heart dropped.

Because the person standing there was the last person I expected to see.

My mother’s closest friend.

Claire Whitmore.

But this time…

May you like

She wasn’t carrying answers.

She was carrying a file with my name on it.
