Chapter 13: The Last Piece Of The Puzzle

The man standing in the doorway looked exactly as I remembered.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

A warm smile that had comforted me after my father died.

For years, I had called him family.

“Uncle James.””

The name escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

James Whitmore stood there silently.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just tired.

Like he had been carrying a secret for too long.

Ethan moved closer to me.

I immediately placed my hand on his shoulder.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, James sighed.

“I was hoping you would never find this room.””

My heart sank.

“You knew about it?””

He looked at Thomas.

“Yes.””

Thomas crossed his arms.

“He knew everything.””

James looked at me.

“I knew what your father wanted me to know.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

James looked down.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

I expected another excuse.

Another explanation.

But he admitted it.

“I failed your father.””

The room became quiet.

Richard stepped forward.

“You did more than fail him.””

James looked at him.

“You don’t know the entire story.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Neither did I for twenty years.””

I looked between them.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

“I want the truth.””

James nodded slowly.

“You deserve it.””

He walked toward the table.

“When your father built Sterling Crown, he needed legal protection. Someone who understood the complicated ownership history.””

“That was you?””

“Yes.””

James looked at the old documents.

“I helped him rebuild the company.””

“Then why betray him?””

His expression changed.

“I didn’t.””

I frowned.

“Then why does everyone keep pointing at you?””

James looked at Thomas.

“Because Thomas wanted revenge.””

Thomas didn’t deny it.

James continued.

“Years ago, your father discovered that someone had manipulated the company records. But before he could expose them, the evidence disappeared.””

“Who took it?””

James looked at the document.

“The person who had access to every legal file.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

James looked directly at Richard.

“Richard.””

Everyone froze.

Richard stepped back.

“No.””

James shook his head.

“You were desperate. You thought your brother was choosing Amelia over you.””

“That’s a lie.””

“You changed the documents because you believed Sterling Crown belonged to your branch of the family.””

Richard’s face became pale.

I looked at him.

“Is it true?””

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

Richard looked at me.

“But I never wanted to hurt you.””

I felt tears burning in my eyes.

“You destroyed my family.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Someone else used my mistake.””

James nodded.

“That’s the part nobody understood.””

I looked at him.

“Who used it?””

James slowly opened another file.

Inside was a series of transactions.

Names.

Dates.

Signatures.

And one person appeared again and again.

I stared.

“No.””

James looked at me sadly.

“Yes.””

My hands trembled.

The person who had manipulated Richard.

The person who had moved money.

The person who had created the chaos.

Was someone I trusted.

Someone my father trusted.

James whispered:

“Your father’s business partner.””

I looked at Thomas.

“Who?””

Thomas answered.

“Your grandfather.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“My grandfather was dead before I was born.””

Thomas nodded.

“Exactly.””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

James closed his eyes.

“Your grandfather created the original scheme before your father took control.””

I couldn’t understand.

“My grandfather?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father spent his life cleaning up the damage left behind.””

I looked at Ethan.

My son was watching me.

Confused.

Scared.

I knew then.

The secret wasn’t about money.

It was about a family that kept passing pain from one generation to another.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at me.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke immediately.

“Amelia.””

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

My father.

Not a recording.

Not a memory.

A real voice.

“Dad?””

The room froze.

Then the voice said:

“You need to leave the hotel.””

I couldn’t move.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

May you like

“I’m sorry I lied to you.””

The call ended.
