Chapter 2: The Hidden Legacy

The entire lobby felt frozen.

Victoria stood beside security, no longer looking arrogant.

She looked afraid.

But I wasn’t paying attention to her anymore.

I was looking at Daniel.

“Explain.””

My voice was calm.

But inside, old memories were rising.

Daniel glanced around.

“Not here.””

I nodded.

“Take us upstairs.””

The private elevator doors opened seconds later.

Ethan held my hand as we stepped inside.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Who was Grandpa?””

I looked at my son’s reflection in the elevator mirror.

His grandfather had been gone for six years.

But his name still carried weight in rooms I rarely entered.

“Someone who believed people mattered more than money.””

Ethan frowned.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

I smiled sadly.

“Because some truths are safer when children don’t have to carry them.””

The elevator opened onto the executive floor.

Daniel led us into the private office overlooking the city.

The view was breathtaking.

But I barely noticed.

“Sit down,” Daniel said.

I remained standing.

“Start talking.””

He took a deep breath.

“Your father, Michael Carter, didn’t just build Sterling Crown.””

“I know that.””

“No. You know the business story.””

Daniel walked toward a locked cabinet.

“You don’t know the family story.””

He opened it and removed an old leather folder.

My eyes narrowed.

“What is that?””

Daniel placed it on the desk.

“This belonged to your father.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Why do you have it?””

“Because he told me to keep it until the day someone tried to judge you without knowing who you were.””

My chest tightened.

My father had always been careful.

Always three steps ahead.

Daniel continued.

“Your father built this hotel after he was betrayed by the people closest to him.””

I stared at him.

“What people?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your uncle Richard.””

The room went quiet.

I felt Ethan’s small hand grab mine.

My uncle’s name had not been spoken in my home for years.

“Richard disappeared after your father exposed what he had done.””

“What did he do?””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“He tried to take everything.””

I slowly sat down.

The past suddenly felt much closer.

My father had always told me one thing before he died.

“Never trust someone who only loves you when they can benefit from you.””

At the time, I thought he was talking about business.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

Daniel opened the folder carefully.

Inside were old photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

But he didn’t hand them to me.

Instead, he looked at Ethan.

“There is something else you need to know.””

I immediately became protective.

“What?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Your son is the reason your father made his final decision.””

I froze.

“What does Ethan have to do with this?””

Before Daniel could answer, the office door suddenly opened.

A woman stood there.

She was older, elegant, and wearing a dark designer coat.

Her eyes locked onto mine.

For a moment, she looked shocked.

Then terrified.

“Amelia…”

I stood.

“Who are you?””

Her lips trembled.

“My name is Eleanor Carter.””

My breath caught.

The last time I heard that name was at my father’s funeral.

Because Eleanor Carter was my father’s sister.

The woman everyone believed had disappeared.

Daniel stepped between us.

“She came because she knows the truth.””

I looked at Eleanor.

“The truth about what?””

She stared at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“About why your father left the hotel to you…”

She paused.

“And why he never told you that someone inside this company has been waiting years to take it back.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with fear.

Then she whispered a name.

A name I never expected.

“Your own family.””

At that exact moment, Daniel’s office phone began ringing.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

“What is it?””

He slowly looked up.

“It’s impossible.””

I stepped closer.

“Daniel?””

He swallowed.

“Someone just accessed your father’s private account.””

“Who?””

May you like

He looked at me.

“The person using the access code is someone who should be dead.””
