Chapter 14: The Father Who Never Left
Nobody spoke after the call ended.
Everyone was staring at me.
I stared at the phone.
My father’s voice.
Impossible.
It couldn’t be real.
Daniel was the first to speak.
“Amelia…”
I held up my hand.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Don’t tell me I imagined it.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Richard looked terrified.
“Your father…”
He stopped.
Thomas stepped forward.
“He never died.””
My entire body went cold.
“What?””
Thomas looked at James.
James lowered his eyes.
“I was supposed to tell you eventually.””
I laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
“Eventually?””
I looked around the room.
“My father was alive.””
I pointed toward everyone.
“And all of you knew?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I didn’t.””
Richard looked away.
“I found out recently.””
Thomas said nothing.
That silence was enough.
I walked toward him.
“You knew.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His answer was quiet.
“Because your father asked me.””
I felt betrayed.
Again.
Everyone kept using my father’s name to justify hurting me.
“Where is he?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then answered.
“Below the hotel.””
The old service tunnels.
A place nobody used anymore.
I didn’t wait.
I grabbed Ethan’s hand.
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Ethan stays here.””
I looked at him.
“He’s my son.””
“And that’s exactly why.””
I understood.
This wasn’t about protecting secrets anymore.
It was about protecting him.
I left Ethan with a trusted employee upstairs.
Then I followed Thomas beneath Sterling Crown.
The underground tunnels were dark.
Old.
Silent.
Every step felt like walking through the hidden history of my family.
Finally, we reached a small room.
Thomas unlocked the door.
And there he was.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakably him.
My father.
Michael Carter.
I stopped breathing.
For years, I had imagined this moment.
But never like this.
“Amelia.””
I couldn’t answer.
I wanted to run to him.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to ask why.
Instead, I whispered:
“Why?””
Tears filled his eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I know.””
“That’s not protection.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
I hated that he didn’t fight back.
I hated that he looked broken.
Because part of me still loved him.
He stepped closer.
“I made mistakes.””
I wiped my tears.
“You lied to me my entire life.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“But I never stopped loving you.””
I looked away.
“Then tell me the truth.””
He nodded.
“The moment I discovered what my father had done, I knew Sterling Crown was built on a dangerous foundation.””
“Your grandfather?””
“Yes.””
“He created the fraud?””
“Yes.””
My father sat down.
“He wanted power. He believed the Carter name belonged above everyone else.””
I listened quietly.
“I spent decades fixing his mistakes.””
“Then why disappear?””
His eyes filled with pain.
“Because the person who tried to destroy Sterling Crown came after you.””
I froze.
“Who?””
My father looked at me.
“The person who raised you after me.””
I felt cold.
“My mother?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“Your godfather.””
My heart stopped.
“James?””
My father nodded.
“He was never trying to steal the hotel.””
“Then what did he want?””
My father looked toward the ceiling.
“He wanted control of the Carter legacy.””
The room became silent.
Then my father said:
“But there’s one thing he doesn’t know.””
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“You are not the owner of Sterling Crown.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He smiled sadly.
“I never left the hotel to you.””
I stepped back.
“Then why?””
“Because I left it to the one person James could never control.””
I didn’t understand.
May you like
Then my father whispered:
“Ethan.””
