Chapter 4: The Family Secret Beneath The Hotel
I spent the next hour staring at the old leather folder on Daniel’s desk.
I had walked into Sterling Crown expecting to deal with an arrogant receptionist.
Instead, I had discovered that my entire family history might have been built on a lie.
Ethan sat quietly on the couch in the corner of the office, drawing in a small notebook he always carried.
That was the part that hurt the most.
My son was watching me question everything I believed.
I walked over and sat beside him.
“You okay?””
He looked up.
“Are you mad?””
I smiled softly.
“No.””
“But everyone keeps talking about secrets.””
I brushed his hair away from his forehead.
“Sometimes adults hide things because they think they’re protecting the people they love.””
“Does that mean Grandpa lied?””
The question hit harder than I expected.
I looked down.
“I don’t know.””
And for the first time in years, I admitted something I hated.
I didn’t know my own father as well as I thought I did.
Daniel placed the folder in front of me.
“Your father wanted you to open this only if someone from the Carter family returned.””
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t he tell me himself?””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Because he was afraid you would hate him.””
Those words stayed in the air.
My father had always been my hero.
The man who taught me kindness.
The man who told me success meant nothing if you lost your humanity.
But now I wondered what else he had hidden.
I opened the folder.
The first thing I saw was an old photograph.
It showed a younger version of my father standing outside the original Sterling Crown building.
But he wasn’t alone.
Beside him stood another man.
A man I had never seen before.
“Who is that?””
Eleanor slowly stepped closer.
“That is Thomas Carter.””
I looked at her.
“Another relative?””
She nodded.
“Your grandfather’s brother.””
I frowned.
“But Richard said the hotel belonged to his family.””
Eleanor looked uncomfortable.
“Because he believes that.””
“Believes?””
She took a deep breath.
“The truth is more complicated.””
Daniel pointed to the photograph.
“Your father didn’t steal this hotel.””
I looked at him.
“Then why did Richard say that?””
“Because Richard only knows half the story.””
I flipped through more pages.
Old contracts.
Newspaper clippings.
Photos of construction.
Then I found a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
My father’s.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Amelia,
If you are reading this, then someone has forced you to discover what I tried to protect you from.
I stopped.
My throat tightened.
Daniel watched silently.
I continued reading.
Our family was not built on greed. It was built on sacrifice. But there are people who will rewrite history if it benefits them.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Eleanor’s face became serious.
“Your father spent years trying to uncover what really happened when Sterling Crown was created.””
“What happened?””
Before she could answer, the office door opened.
A young employee stood there nervously.
“Mr. Brooks?””
Daniel turned.
“What is it?””
“The woman from reception…”
Victoria.
My expression hardened.
“What about her?””
“She’s refusing to leave.””
Daniel sighed.
I stood.
“Let me handle it.””
When we returned to the lobby, Victoria was standing near the entrance.
But the confidence was gone.
Her perfect posture had disappeared.
The moment she saw me, she rushed forward.
“Ms. Carter, please.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“I made a mistake.””
“Yes, you did.””
She looked embarrassed.
“I judged you.””
“You didn’t just judge me.””
Her eyes lowered.
“You embarrassed my son.””
Victoria looked at Ethan.
Her expression changed.
“I’m sorry.””
Ethan looked at me.
I let him decide.
After a moment, he nodded slightly.
But I wasn’t finished.
“Victoria, people make mistakes. But the way you treated us showed your character.””
She swallowed.
“I understand.””
Before security could approach, the main entrance doors suddenly opened.
A group of executives entered.
At the front was a man I recognized immediately.
My father’s former attorney.
James Whitmore.
He looked at me with a serious expression.
“Amelia Carter.””
I nodded.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
His eyes moved to Daniel.
Then Eleanor.
“We have a problem.””
My stomach tightened.
“What problem?””
He handed Daniel a sealed envelope.
“The board received this an hour ago.””
Daniel opened it.
His face changed instantly.
“What is it?””
James looked directly at me.
“Someone has filed a legal claim stating that you are not the rightful owner of Sterling Crown.””
The lobby went silent.
I stared at him.
“Who filed it?””
James hesitated.
May you like
Then answered.
“Richard Carter.””
