Chapter 3: The Name From The Past
I couldn’t move.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
The city lights outside the window blurred as my mind tried to process Daniel’s words.
“Someone who should be dead?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
He picked up the phone and checked the information again.
“Your father created a private account before he passed away. Only three people knew about it.””
“Who?””
“Your father. Me. And…”
He stopped.
“And who?””
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“Richard Carter.””
My uncle.
The man who had vanished years ago.
The man everyone believed was gone forever.
Ethan looked between us.
“Mom, why does everyone look scared?””
I forced a smile.
“Because adults sometimes have problems they should have solved a long time ago.””
But I knew that wasn’t true.
This wasn’t just an old family argument.
Someone had returned.
And they had entered my father’s locked world.
Daniel walked toward the window.
“Victoria wasn’t the only person watching you today.””
I turned.
“What do you mean?””
“She wasn’t randomly rude.””
A chill moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked serious.
“Someone wanted to know if you would come here.””
I stared at him.
“Someone sent her?””
“We don’t know yet.””
Eleanor finally spoke.
“She was testing you.””
Everyone looked at her.
“She needed to know whether Amelia Carter was still the quiet woman who avoided attention…”
Eleanor stepped closer.
“Or the woman who inherited her father’s power.””
I didn’t like where this was going.
“My father never wanted me involved in this.””
Eleanor gave me a sad look.
“Your father wanted to protect you.””
“From what?””
She looked toward the folder.
“From the people who smiled at him while they planned to destroy him.””
The silence was heavy.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something told me not to.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then an older man’s voice came through.
“Amelia.””
My blood turned cold.
I knew that voice.
Even after all these years.
“Uncle Richard?””
Ethan looked at me.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
The voice on the phone laughed softly.
“I see Eleanor finally told you.””
My grip tightened.
“You’re alive.””
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
Another quiet laugh.
“Still asking the wrong questions.””
I stood frozen.
“Why did you access my father’s account?””
The voice became colder.
“Because that account was never yours.””
My eyes narrowed.
“My father left it to me.””
“No, Amelia.””
A pause.
Then his next words destroyed everything I believed.
“Your father left you the hotel because he knew you were the only person who could survive the truth.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Eleanor.
“What truth?””
Richard’s voice dropped.
“The hotel was never built on your father’s money.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“What are you saying?””
“You really don’t know, do you?””
The line went silent for a moment.
Then he whispered:
“Your father stole Sterling Crown from the people who originally owned it.””
I froze.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
My hand trembled.
“Who originally owned it?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Our family.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
The woman who had humiliated me downstairs suddenly felt like the smallest part of a much bigger problem.
Because now I had a question I couldn’t ignore.

If Richard was telling the truth…
Then who was I really?
