Chapter 6: The Truth My Mother Buried

I read my mother’s letter three times.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I didn’t want to believe them.

Richard had saved my father?

The same man who was trying to take away everything my father built?

The same man who disappeared and returned demanding control?

Nothing made sense.

Daniel stood beside me.

“What does it say?””

I handed him the letter.

He read silently.

His expression changed.

“Impossible.””

“That’s what I thought.””

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

When she finished reading, she closed her eyes.

“I should have told you.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

Her face filled with regret.

“Not everything.””

I folded the letter.

“I’m tired of everyone knowing pieces of my life except me.””

Nobody answered.

Because they knew I was right.

For years, people had protected me with silence.

But silence had become another kind of betrayal.

I continued reading.

My mother’s letter explained that decades earlier, my father and Richard had worked together.

They were not enemies.

They were partners.

They had built Sterling Crown together.

But someone had tried to destroy them.

Someone inside their own circle.

The person who caused the betrayal was never revealed.

Until now.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

Amelia, trust your instincts. The person closest to you may be the one who knows the least.

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel frowned.

“I don’t know.””

A sound came from downstairs.

A door closing.

We all froze.

“Did someone come in?””

Daniel immediately moved toward the stairs.

I followed.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Then we heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone was inside.

Daniel whispered.

“Stay behind me.””

We reached the living room.

And there he was.

Standing near the fireplace.

Older.

Gray hair.

But the same cold eyes.

Richard Carter.

My uncle looked at me.

Not with anger.

With sadness.

“I hoped you would find the letter before I had to explain everything.””

I stepped forward.

“You broke into my house.””

He shook his head.

“This house was never just yours.””

My expression hardened.

“You have a strange way of showing family love.””

Richard looked at the old photographs on the wall.

“I loved your father.””

I laughed quietly.

“You sued me.””

“Because I’m trying to protect you.””

“By taking away my hotel?””

His face changed.

“By stopping you from repeating your father’s mistake.””

The room went quiet.

“What mistake?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“The mistake of trusting the wrong person.””

I wanted to believe he was manipulating me.

But something about his voice was different.

He wasn’t acting like a villain.

He looked exhausted.

Broken.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Richard looked at Eleanor.

Then Daniel.

Finally, he looked back at me.

“The person who betrayed your father is still alive.””

My heart tightened.

“Who?””

Richard stepped closer.

And whispered:

“The person who has been running Sterling Crown’s finances for the last ten years.””

Daniel immediately went pale.

I turned toward him.

“Daniel?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed past me.

“At him.””

Everyone froze.

I looked back.

Daniel’s face had lost all color.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard’s voice was quiet.

“But it’s true.””

I stared at the man who had helped me uncover the truth.

The man my father trusted.

The man who had stood beside me all day.

Daniel slowly looked down.

Then whispered:

“I can explain.””

May you like

And in that moment, I realized the family secret wasn’t just buried in the past.

It was standing right in front of me.
