Chapter 8: The Boardroom Trap
The Sterling Crown boardroom had always been my father’s favorite place.
He used to tell me that a room full of powerful people was not something to fear.
It was something to understand.
“Never be impressed by expensive suits,” he once told me.
“Listen to what people do when they think nobody is watching.””
Now I sat at the head of that same table.
And every person in the room was watching me.
Victoria stood near the wall.
But she wasn’t wearing her receptionist uniform anymore.
She wore a professional suit.
My eyes narrowed.
“So it’s true.””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Ms. Carter…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“You knew exactly who I was.””
Victoria looked down.
“I was instructed to test you.””
“By who?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
The board members shifted nervously.
One of them, Charles Bennett, cleared his throat.
“Amelia, we understand this is emotional, but we need to discuss ownership.””
I looked at him.
“You mean the lawsuit.””
Nobody responded.
Richard stood behind me.
The board noticed him immediately.
Their expressions changed.
They weren’t surprised.
They were afraid.
That told me more than any document could.
I leaned forward.
“Why are you afraid of him?””
Charles looked away.
Richard smiled bitterly.
“Because they know what happened.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
Before Richard could answer, the conference room doors opened.
A woman entered.
Everyone became silent.
She was elegant.
Confident.
And completely familiar.
I had seen her face before.
In the photograph.
My mother’s old friend.
The woman standing beside my parents decades ago.
“Amelia,” she said.
My heart raced.
“Who are you?””
She smiled sadly.
“My name is Claire Whitmore.””
James Whitmore’s sister.
The same family that had represented my father.
I looked at James.
He looked shocked.
“I thought you left.””
Claire ignored him.
She walked toward the table.
“I came because you deserve the truth.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You’re too late.””
Claire looked at him.
“You always did love dramatic entrances.””
I felt overwhelmed.
“Enough.””
Everyone stopped.
“I am tired of people walking into rooms and telling me they know my life better than I do.””
The room became quiet.
“So someone explain.””
Claire placed a small envelope on the table.
“This belonged to your father.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“His final confession.””
My breathing stopped.
“My father wrote this?””
Claire nodded.
“He knew the truth would eventually come out.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
A handwritten message.
Only a few lines.
Amelia,
If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally revealed themselves.
My hands trembled.
I continued.
The greatest threat to Sterling Crown was never the person who wanted to take it.
It was the person who wanted everyone to believe they already owned it.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Claire’s expression became serious.
“It means your father never trusted the company records.””
James looked confused.
“Why?””
Claire answered.
“Because someone changed the original ownership documents.””
A chill ran through me.
“Someone forged them?””
She nodded.
“And that person has been hiding for twenty years.””
The room went silent.
Then Claire looked directly at me.
“The person who changed those documents…”
She paused.
“…is the person who raised you.””
I stopped breathing.
May you like
Because there was only one person she could mean.
My mother.
