Chapter 8: The Night Noah Was Born

The next morning, I confronted Vanessa.

I didn’t yell.

I didn’t accuse.

I simply placed my phone on the table.

The message from Ethan was still there.

Her face changed the moment she saw it.

“You talked to him?””

“No.””

I stared at her.

“He talked to me.””

She sat down slowly.

“Daniel…”

“What happened the night Noah was born?””

Her hands started shaking.

That was my answer before she even spoke.

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s not an explanation.””

She looked down.

“When Noah was born, Ethan was there.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because I had been with him before you.””

I nodded slowly.

I already knew that part.

“What I don’t know is why you let me believe Noah was mine.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“Because you loved him.””

The words angered me.

“You used my love.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“You knew I would stay.””

She didn’t deny it.

That hurt the most.

“I was young.””

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“You were selfish.””

She looked away.

“I thought Ethan would leave.””

“Why?””

“Because he told me he didn’t want a child.””

I crossed my arms.

“And when he changed his mind?””

She was silent.

“When did he change his mind, Vanessa?””

She whispered:

“Last year.””

The same time.

The same year Ethan appeared.

I walked away.

I needed air.

I needed to think.

Later that afternoon, I met Ethan.

I expected someone dangerous.

Someone cruel.

Instead, I saw a man sitting alone in a coffee shop.

He looked nervous.

Not confident.

Not powerful.

Just nervous.

When he saw me, he stood.

“Daniel.””

I stayed standing.

“You filed for my son.””

His face tightened.

“I filed for my son.””

I stared at him.

“You abandoned him.””

His eyes dropped.

“I know.””

“Eight years.””

“I know.””

“Then why now?””

Ethan looked at the floor.

“Because I found out Vanessa lied to both of us.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He pulled out a folder.

“I never knew she changed the birth certificate.””

I looked at the papers.

“She told me you knew.””

My stomach turned.

“She told you I knew?””

“Yes.””

“She told me you didn’t want Noah.””

Ethan looked shocked.

“She told me you hated being a father.””

The two of us stood there silently.

Because suddenly, the same woman had created two completely different stories.

“She played us against each other,” Ethan said quietly.

I didn’t want to agree.

But I knew he was right.

I opened the folder.

Inside were messages.

Emails.

Documents.

Evidence that Vanessa had been contacting Ethan for months.

One message caught my attention.

*“If Daniel finds out the truth, he’ll lose everything.””*

I looked at Ethan.

“What does this mean?””

He hesitated.

“I think Vanessa wasn’t trying to protect Noah.””

“Then what was she doing?””

He looked at me.

“She was protecting herself.””

That night, I searched through old files at home.

Marriage documents.

Medical records.

Anything connected to Noah’s birth.

At midnight, I found something.

A hospital form.

A page I had never seen before.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Not from me.

Not from Vanessa.

From a nurse.

*“Mother requested father’s name be removed from all documents.””*

My heart stopped.

Because beneath that note was another line.

Added years later.

*“Father attempted contact after learning child’s location.””*

I stared at the words.

Ethan hadn’t abandoned Noah.

Someone had kept him away.

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Vanessa was standing in the doorway.

She looked at the document in my hand.

May you like

And whispered:

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
