Chapter 10: The Ticket With My Daughter’s Name

The plane ticket was still in my hand when Vanessa walked back into the room.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Her eyes went straight to the paper.

I watched the color disappear from her face.

“What is that?””

I held it up.

“You tell me.””

She stopped.

The silence was louder than any confession.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Not this time.””

Sophie was upstairs.

Noah was in the kitchen with Ethan.

I made sure my children couldn’t hear.

“Why is my daughter’s name on a one-way ticket?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I can explain.””

“You always say that.””

She looked at me.

“Because I can.””

“Then explain.””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

That was the first time I saw Vanessa with no story prepared.

No excuse.

No carefully chosen words.

Just fear.

“I wasn’t trying to take Sophie away from you.””

I stared at her.

“But you bought a ticket.””

“Yes.””

“For where?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“California.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

She sat down.

“Because Ethan was going to ruin everything.””

I almost laughed.

“Ethan?””

She nodded.

“He was threatening me.””

“About what?””

She looked at the floor.

“About telling you the truth.””

I stepped closer.

“So you decided to run?””

“No.””

“You decided to take our daughter and disappear.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I could protect her.””

“From what?””

She whispered:

“From losing everything.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

I pointed toward the stairs.

“Do you understand what you did to Noah?””

She cried silently.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“He thought he wasn’t part of this family.””

That sentence hit her.

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what she had done.

Later that afternoon, my attorney arrived.

Michael brought another folder.

He placed it on the table.

“Daniel, we need to act quickly.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements.

My eyes moved over the numbers.

Thousands.

Then tens of thousands.

Money transferred over months.

“What is this?””

“Vanessa moving funds.””

“To where?””

“We’re tracing it.””

I looked at her.

She sat quietly.

For once, she had nothing to say.

Then my phone rang.

It was the school.

My heart jumped.

“Hello?””

The voice on the other end sounded nervous.

“Mr. Carter, we wanted to confirm something.””

“What?””

“Your wife contacted the school yesterday.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She requested Noah’s records be transferred.””

I froze.

“Transferred where?””

The woman hesitated.

“California.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“She was planning this.””

Michael nodded.

“This wasn’t a sudden decision.””

I felt something break inside me.

The worst part wasn’t the money.

It wasn’t even the lies.

It was realizing my wife had been quietly building a new life without me.

Without my children having a choice.

That night, I sat beside Noah.

He was drawing at the kitchen table.

A picture of our family.

Me.

Him.

Sophie.

And a space beside Vanessa.

I looked at the empty space.

“You didn’t draw Mommy?””

He shrugged.

“She’s mad at me.””

I swallowed.

“Noah…”

He looked up.

“Did I do something wrong?””

I immediately shook my head.

“No.””

“Then why did she want me gone?””

I had no answer.

Because the truth was too painful for an eight-year-old.

So I told him the only thing that mattered.

“None of this is because of you.””

He looked at me.

“Promise?””

I held his hand.

“I promise.””

That night, after everyone was asleep, I received another message.

Not from Rachel.

Not from Ethan.

From an unknown number.

The message contained one sentence.

*“Daniel, if you want to know why Vanessa chose Sophie and not Noah, check the hospital records from the day Sophie was born.””*

I stared at the screen.

My heart started racing.

Because I suddenly realized something.

May you like

Vanessa’s secret wasn’t only about Noah.

It was about Sophie too.
