Chapter 6: The Photograph

I stared at the photograph.

The room felt completely silent.

The man in the picture looked familiar.

Not because I knew him.

Because I had seen pieces of him before.

The dark hair.

The eyes.

The smile.

I looked at Noah.

“Where did you find this?””

He rubbed his hands together nervously.

“In Mommy’s drawer.””

“When?””

“A few weeks ago.””

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because Mommy got mad.””

“What did she say?””

He looked down.

“She said I was bad for looking.””

I took a deep breath.

“Buddy, you are never bad for asking questions.””

Noah nodded.

But he still looked afraid.

“What does it mean, Dad?””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because the truth was terrifying.

I had spent eight years believing I knew my family.

My children.

My marriage.

And now, everything felt like it was falling apart.

I turned the photo over again.

The handwriting was Vanessa’s.

*Your real father.*

Not biological.

Not someone from the past.

Just those words.

Designed to hurt.

I called my attorney.

An hour later, we were sitting in his office.

His name was Michael.

He looked carefully at the photograph.

“Daniel, before we make assumptions, we need evidence.””

“I know.””

“Do you have reason to believe Noah isn’t your biological son?””

I looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Michael nodded.

“But we need to understand why Vanessa was hiding this.””

That was the question.

Why hide it?

Why threaten Noah?

Why try to remove him?

When I returned home that evening, Vanessa was waiting.

She looked different.

Not angry.

Worried.

“Where have you been?””

“Finding answers.””

She looked at the photograph in my hand.

Her face went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

“From Noah.””

She froze.

For the first time, I saw real fear.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I raised my hand.

“Now you talk.””

She sat down.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I felt my heart breaking.

“You let me believe Noah was mine for eight years.””

“He is yours.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She started crying.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

I placed the photograph on the table.

“You tried to remove my son.””

“No.””

“You locked him away.””

“I was angry.””

“You planned to send him away.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She didn’t answer.

Then she whispered:

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She wiped her tears.

“Daniel, there’s something you don’t know.””

My phone suddenly rang.

It was Michael.

I answered.

His voice sounded serious.

“Daniel, I checked something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“The man in that photograph…”

I waited.

Michael continued.

“He’s not a stranger.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who is he?””

Michael lowered his voice.

“He’s someone who has been connected to your family since before Noah was born.””

I felt cold.

“Connected how?””

Another pause.

Then Michael said:

“Daniel, you need to come here immediately.””

“Why?””

May you like

His answer made my blood run cold.

“Because that man just filed for custody of Noah.””
