Chapter 11: The Daughter She Chose

I drove to the hospital archives the next morning.

I didn’t tell Vanessa.

I didn’t tell Ethan.

I needed answers before anyone had a chance to change the story.

The woman at the records desk looked at my request.

“Birth records?””

“Yes.””

“For Sophie Carter?””

I nodded.

She disappeared into the back.

When she returned, she handed me a folder.

I opened it slowly.

The first pages were normal.

Medical information.

Delivery notes.

Names.

Then I saw something strange.

A note attached to the file.

*Additional parent information requested.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

I kept reading.

A name appeared.

Not mine.

Not Vanessa’s.

Another man.

I felt my stomach drop.

But this time, I wasn’t shocked.

I was prepared.

I kept reading.

The note explained that a paternity question had been raised shortly after Sophie’s birth.

A question Vanessa never told me about.

I sat there frozen.

My daughter.

My little girl.

The child who called me Daddy every morning.

Another secret.

Another lie.

When I returned home, Vanessa was waiting.

She knew.

I could see it.

“What did you find?””

I placed the folder on the table.

“You tell me.””

She looked at it.

Then she started crying.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

“About Sophie?””

She nodded.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Who is her father?””

She whispered the name.

The same name.

Ethan.

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Both children.

Both my children.

Both raised by me.

And both surrounded by lies.

“Did you ever plan to tell me?””

Vanessa looked away.

“No.””

That answer hurt more than anything.

“Why?””

“Because you loved them.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“Yes, it does.””

She stepped closer.

“You loved them more than anything.””

“And?””

“And I knew you wouldn’t leave.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t trust my love.””

“No.””

She cried.

“I trusted it too much.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I knew you would stay because you were their father.””

The word stayed in the air.

Father.

Not because of blood.

Because of everything I had done.

Everything she had taken for granted.

That afternoon, Ethan came over.

When I told him about Sophie, his face changed.

“You didn’t know?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He sat down.

“I swear, Daniel, I didn’t know either.””

I believed him.

Not because he deserved it.

Because his shock looked real.

Then Ethan said something that changed everything.

“Vanessa didn’t hide the truth because she was afraid of me.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“She was afraid of what would happen if all of us compared notes.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What notes?””

He pulled out his phone.

“I kept every conversation after I found out about Noah.””

He showed me messages.

Vanessa had told him:

*“Daniel is attached. He’ll never let go.””*

Another message:

*“I just need enough time to secure my future.””*

Another:

*“The children are the only thing keeping him from walking away.””*

I stared at the screen.

She wasn’t protecting the family.

She was controlling it.

That evening, my lawyer filed emergency custody paperwork.

Not against Ethan.

Against Vanessa.

The person I once trusted most.

But before we could finish, my phone rang.

The police.

My heart dropped.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“We need you to come home immediately.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your wife reported that you kidnapped your children.””

I stood frozen.

“She did what?””

The officer continued.

“And she has documents claiming you are not their legal father.””

I looked at Noah and Sophie.

Then at Vanessa standing across the room.

May you like

And I realized she wasn’t running anymore.

She was fighting back.
