Chapter 7: The Man in the Photograph

I drove to Michael’s office with my hands locked around the steering wheel.

I barely remembered the roads.

The only thing I could think about was one sentence.

*Someone just filed for custody of Noah.*

A stranger.

A man whose face had been hidden from me.

A man my wife apparently knew.

When I walked into Michael’s office, he was standing beside his desk with a folder in his hand.

“Daniel.””

I looked at the folder.

“Tell me everything.””

He motioned for me to sit.

“I ran the name connected to the custody filing.””

My heart pounded.

“What name?””

He opened the folder.

“Ethan Miller.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Michael placed another document in front of me.

A birth record.

My eyes moved down the page.

Mother: Vanessa Carter.

Father: Ethan Miller.

Date of birth.

Noah’s birthday.

I stared at the paper.

The room felt like it was spinning.

“No.””

Michael didn’t speak.

“No, this has to be wrong.””

“I wish it was.””

I stood up.

“My name is on Noah’s birth certificate.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Michael looked at me carefully.

“Daniel, your name was added later.””

I froze.

“What?””

“There was an amendment.””

My voice dropped.

“Vanessa changed it?””

Michael nodded.

“Three months after Noah was born.””

I felt sick.

I remembered that time.

Noah had been born early.

Vanessa had spent weeks in the hospital.

She told me everything was complicated.

She told me she needed me.

And I stayed.

I became a father.

I loved that little boy before I ever heard his first word.

I loved him when he was sick.

I loved him when he took his first steps.

Biology didn’t matter.

But betrayal did.

“Why would she do this?””

Michael closed the folder.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

I returned home that evening.

Vanessa was sitting in the living room.

She looked like she had been waiting for me.

“Did you talk to him?””

I stopped.

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I knew Ethan was going to do something.””

“You knew he filed for custody?””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

The anger inside me rose.

“You let him.””

“I was trying to handle it.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to control it.””

She stood.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She walked toward the window.

“Ethan found out about Noah last year.””

I stared at her.

“Last year?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was scared.””

“Of him?””

She didn’t answer.

“Of losing Noah?””

Still nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Of losing you.””

That sentence almost made me laugh.

“You destroyed my trust because you were afraid of losing me?””

She started crying.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“How?””

She looked at me.

“I thought Ethan would disappear.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why would he disappear?””

Vanessa sat down.

“Because he never wanted to be a father.””

I looked at her.

“Then why is he asking for custody now?””

She covered her face.

“I don’t know.””

But I knew she was hiding something.

I had spent years believing Vanessa was honest.

Now every answer created three more questions.

Later that night, I checked on Noah.

He was awake.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you mad at me?””

The question broke me.

I sat beside him.

“Why would I be mad at you?””

“Because of the picture.””

I shook my head.

“Noah, listen to me.””

I held his hand.

“Nothing you find changes how I feel about you.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“But what if he’s my real dad?””

I swallowed.

The words hurt.

But I stayed calm.

“The man who raises you, loves you, and protects you is your dad.””

He looked at me.

“Are you still my dad?””

I pulled him into my arms.

“Always.””

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

This time, it wasn’t Rachel.

It was Ethan.

*“You think you know the truth about Noah. You don’t.””*

Another message appeared.

*“Ask Vanessa what happened the night Noah was born.””*

I looked at my son sleeping beside me.

Then I looked at the message.

May you like

Because suddenly, I wasn’t just fighting for custody.

I was fighting to uncover what my wife had buried for eight years.
