Chapter 4: The Woman at the Door

For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.

The woman standing in my doorway looked completely comfortable.

Like she belonged there.

Like my house was already hers.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Explain.””

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

That scared me more than yelling would have.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Daniel, don’t do this in front of her.””

“In front of who?””

I pointed toward the woman.

“Someone you apparently invited into our home?””

The woman shifted awkwardly.

“Maybe we should talk privately.””

I laughed once.

A short, empty laugh.

“No.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“We’re talking right here.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You’re making a scene.””

“My son was locked in a bathroom last night.””

The woman’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

She looked at Vanessa.

“You didn’t tell me that part.””

My eyes narrowed.

That sentence told me everything.

This woman knew something.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him. He’s angry.””

“Angry?””

I stared at her.

“My eight-year-old son thought he was being replaced.””

The woman looked toward the stairs.

Then she lowered her voice.

“I didn’t know.””

“Who are you?””

She hesitated.

“My name is Rachel.””

“And why are you here?””

Before Rachel could answer, Vanessa interrupted.

“She’s an old friend.””

I looked at the moving truck outside.

“Old friends usually don’t arrive with boxes.””

Silence.

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

Vanessa looked angry.

I had known my wife for ten years.

I knew her expressions.

I knew when she was hiding something.

And right now, she was terrified.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said, “we need to discuss this calmly.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not anymore.””

I walked toward the stairs.

“Kids.””

Noah appeared at the top step.

He looked scared.

Behind him was Sophie.

The moment Noah saw Rachel, his face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

I noticed.

“Buddy?””

Noah grabbed Sophie’s hand.

“Dad…”

“What is it?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at Rachel.

Then whispered:

“That’s the lady Mommy was talking to.””

My entire body went cold.

Vanessa snapped.

“Noah, go upstairs.””

“No.””

I stepped between them.

“You’re going to let him speak.””

Noah swallowed.

“Mommy said I would have to share my room.””

Rachel looked shocked.

“She told you that?””

Noah nodded.

“She said I wasn’t staying here forever.””

Sophie started crying.

“I didn’t like when Mommy said that.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

The silence was enough.

I picked up my phone.

Vanessa immediately noticed.

“What are you doing?””

“Calling my attorney.””

Her face changed.

“You’re serious?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“Daniel, think about what you’re doing.””

“I am.””

I looked at Noah.

“For the first time in a long time, I am.””

That afternoon, I took the kids to my brother’s house.

I didn’t trust leaving them alone with Vanessa.

Not after what happened.

My brother Mark opened the door and immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I looked at my children sitting quietly behind me.

Then I said:

“I think my wife has been planning to remove Noah from our home.””

Mark stared at me.

“What?””

“I don’t know the whole story yet.””

“But I’m going to find out.””

That night, after the kids fell asleep, I checked my phone.

The unknown number had sent another message.

This time, there was an attachment.

A photo.

My hands shook as I opened it.

It was a picture of a document.

At the top were the words:

*Temporary Guardianship Agreement.*

And underneath was Vanessa’s signature.

My heart sank.

Because the date on the paper was three weeks earlier.

Three weeks before the dinner.

Three weeks before Noah was locked away.

Someone had been planning this for a long time.

Then another message appeared.

*“Daniel, you need to know why Vanessa wanted Noah gone.””*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then the next line appeared.

*“Because Noah found out what she was hiding.””*
