Chapter 3: The Secret Plan

I stared at the message for nearly a minute.

My fingers felt numb.

The phone screen blurred in front of my eyes.

“Dad?””

Noah’s voice pulled me back.

I quickly locked the screen.

“It’s okay, buddy.””

But it wasn’t.

Nothing was okay.

Someone had just sent me a warning about my wife.

And somehow, I knew it was connected to everything that happened that night.

I walked downstairs after Noah and Sophie fell asleep.

Vanessa was sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked exhausted.

But not guilty.

That bothered me.

A person who accidentally hurt their child would be devastated.

They would apologize.

They would cry.

Vanessa looked angry.

“You really called the police on me?””

I stood across from her.

“I called because my son was locked in a bathroom.””

“He was fine.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“He wasn’t.””

She looked away.

“You’re turning the kids against me.””

I almost laughed.

“No. I’m listening to them.””

She stood up.

“You think I’m the villain now?””

I looked at her.

“I think you need to explain why Noah believes he’s being replaced.””

Her face changed.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“What are you talking about?””

“Someone is taking his room tomorrow.””

Silence.

A long, uncomfortable silence.

Then Vanessa smiled.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me who is coming.””

She walked toward the refrigerator.

“Daniel, you’re exhausted.””

“Answer me.””

She opened a bottle of water.

“You’re always dramatic when it comes to the kids.””

I watched her carefully.

“You didn’t answer.””

She ignored me.

That was when I heard something.

A notification.

Not from my phone.

From hers.

Vanessa quickly grabbed it.

Too quickly.

I saw the screen before she turned it away.

A name.

A message preview.

*“The room will be ready by Monday.””*

My chest tightened.

“Who is that?””

She locked her phone.

“No one.””

“Vanessa.””

“Drop it.””

I stepped closer.

“Someone is moving into my son’s room.””

Her expression changed.

“Your son?””

The words came out cold.

“Not our son?””

I felt like someone had punched me.

Because that was the same phrase Sophie repeated.

Not part of our real family.

I walked away before I said something I would regret.

The next morning, I woke up early.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I checked on Noah first.

He was asleep.

Sophie was curled up beside her stuffed rabbit.

For a moment, I just stood there.

Looking at my children.

Wondering how long they had been afraid to tell me something was wrong.

Then I heard a noise downstairs.

A car door.

I walked to the window.

A moving truck was parked outside.

My stomach dropped.

I ran downstairs.

Vanessa was standing near the front door.

Beside her was a woman I had never seen before.

The woman smiled.

“Daniel.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“This is exactly what I wanted to avoid.””

I stared at the moving boxes.

Then at the woman.

Then back at my wife.

“Who is she?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But the woman answered first.

“I’m here to pick up my son’s things.””

My heart stopped.

“Your son?””

She looked upstairs.

“He’ll be staying here starting today.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

May you like

Because then she said the one sentence that made everything finally make sense.

“After all, Vanessa promised me Noah’s room would be empty.””
