Chapter 5: The Hidden Truth
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Noah sitting on that bathroom floor.
I saw Sophie hiding behind my chair.
I saw Vanessa’s face when she realized the truth was coming out.
But the thing that kept bothering me was one question.
What did Noah know?
At 6:00 a.m., I called the number that had been messaging me.
It rang twice.
Then someone answered.
“Daniel?””
A woman’s voice.
I sat up.
“Who is this?””
“My name is Rachel.””
The same woman from my house.
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You were the one who sent the messages?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She was quiet for a moment.
“Because I realized Vanessa wasn’t telling me the truth either.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel sighed.
“I met Vanessa six months ago.””
My stomach tightened.
“Six months?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t think that was important to tell me?””
“I didn’t know you existed.””
That answer shocked me.
“What?””
“Vanessa told me she was separated from you.””
I stood up.
“She told you we were separated?””
“Yes.””
I walked across the room.
“She told you that?””
“She said you were only staying together because of the children.””
My hands curled into fists.
“She lied.””
“I know that now.””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“I thought I was helping someone leave a bad marriage.””
“And instead?””
“Instead, I think I was helping someone destroy a family.””
I looked toward the hallway where my children were sleeping.
“What does Noah know?””
Rachel went silent.
Then she said:
“Your son found messages.””
“What kind of messages?””
“Between Vanessa and someone else.””
My heart dropped.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Rachel.””
“I only saw part of them.””
“Tell me.””
She hesitated.
“He found out Vanessa was planning to change the custody arrangement.””
I closed my eyes.
“But why?””
Rachel whispered:
“Because she wanted to move away.””
The room felt smaller.
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“Rachel.””
“She never told me everything.””
I paced around the room.
“She was going to take my children?””
“I think she was trying to.””
The words hurt.
But then something else clicked.
“Noah saw those messages?””
“Yes.””
“And that’s why she locked him away?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Later that morning, I met Rachel at a coffee shop.
I didn’t want to trust her.
But I needed answers.
She looked nervous when she sat down.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at her.
“Sorry doesn’t explain why you were standing in my house with a moving truck.””
She looked down.
“I believed Vanessa.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
For the first time, she looked genuinely ashamed.
“She told me Noah was a troubled child.””
My jaw tightened.
“She said he needed to leave because he was dangerous.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“Noah?””
Rachel nodded.
“She said he was violent.””
I laughed bitterly.
“My son cries when he sees bugs.””
“I know that now.””
She pulled out her phone.
“I have something.””
She showed me screenshots.
Messages between her and Vanessa.
My eyes moved across the screen.
Vanessa had written:
*“Once Daniel understands Noah isn’t his responsibility anymore, everything will be easier.””*
I felt sick.
But then I saw another message.
A message Rachel had never opened.
It was from Vanessa.
Sent two days before.
*“Make sure the room is ready. If Noah tells anyone what he found, we’re done.””*
I stared at the words.
“What did he find?””
Rachel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
I stood up.
“I need to talk to my son.””
When I arrived back at Mark’s house, Noah was sitting at the kitchen table.
He looked up.
“Dad?””
I sat beside him.
“Buddy, I need to ask you something.””
He nodded.
“Did you find something on Mommy’s phone?””
His face changed.
He looked scared.
“Dad…”
“It’s okay.””
“No, it’s not.””
He lowered his voice.
“Mommy said if I told you, she would take Sophie away too.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did you find, Noah?””
He looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“A picture.””
“What picture?””
He reached into his backpack.
And pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I found this hidden in Mommy’s drawer.””
I opened it.
It was a photograph.
A photograph of a man I had never seen before.

And written on the back were four words.
*“Your real father.””*
