Chapter 7: The Child Vanessa Hid
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The laptop screen showed only darkness.
But the message remained.
*The truth will destroy the family she built.*
I stared at those words until they blurred.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
She wasn't angry anymore.
She wasn't defending herself.
She looked terrified.
"Marcus," she whispered.
I turned toward her.
"Don't.""
Her lips closed.
"Don't explain. Not yet.""
Nia stood beside me, holding onto my arm.
She was trying to be brave.
But I could feel her shaking.
Daniel picked up the laptop.
"The file isn't finished.""
"What do you mean?""
He clicked the folder.
There were three files.
The first was the video we had just watched.
The second was a scanned document.
The third was an audio recording.
Daniel opened the document.
The image appeared on the screen.
A hospital record.
I leaned closer.
At the top was Nia's name.
My name.
Emily's name.
Everything looked normal.
Until I saw the date.
The date wasn't from when Nia was born.
It was from six months after.
"What is this?""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"You tell him.""
Vanessa looked down.
"I can't.""
I felt anger rise.
"You had no problem taking things from my daughter. You had no problem letting her wear broken shoes while your kids had everything. But now you can't talk?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You don't understand what happened.""
"Then make me understand.""
She took a deep breath.
"My daughter...""
She stopped.
"My children.""
The words caught my attention.
"What about your children?""
Daniel answered.
"Vanessa had another child before she married you.""
I looked at him.
"Yes. I know that.""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"You know she had children. You don't know the truth about them.""
Vanessa sat down.
Her hands covered her face.
"I made one mistake.""
I laughed bitterly.
"One?""
She looked at me.
"I was desperate.""
"Desperate enough to steal from a child?""
"No.""
Her voice broke.
"Desperate enough to save my son.""
The room went quiet.
I looked at her.
"What does your son have to do with Emily?""
Vanessa wiped her tears.
"Everything.""
Daniel opened another file.
This time, it was a medical document.
"Vanessa's son was sick.""
She nodded.
"He needed treatment.""
I stared.
"And?""
"And I couldn't afford it.""
The anger inside me didn't disappear.
But confusion started replacing it.
"Emily helped you?""
Vanessa looked away.
"Yes.""
That surprised me.
Daniel continued.
"Emily found out Vanessa was struggling. She paid for the treatment.""
Nia looked confused.
"Mom helped her?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your mother believed everyone deserved a second chance.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Then why?""
Her voice became quiet.
"Because after Emily helped me, I learned something.""
"What?""
She looked at Nia.
"I learned Emily had a trust for her.""
My stomach tightened.
"You wanted the money.""
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
"At first, no.""
I didn't believe her.
"At first?""
She closed her eyes.
"My son's condition got worse.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"And that's when she crossed the line.""
Vanessa stood suddenly.
"You don't know what it's like to watch your child suffer!""
Her voice echoed through the room.
"You don't know what a mother will do when doctors tell her there is nothing else they can try!""
Nia stepped back.
The anger in Vanessa's voice scared her.
I immediately moved in front of my daughter.
"Lower your voice.""
Vanessa froze.
She looked at Nia.
And guilt crossed her face.
For the first time, she saw what she had become.
"I never wanted to hurt her.""
Daniel looked at her.
"But you did.""
Vanessa whispered:
"I only borrowed the money.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Borrowed?""
"I planned to return it.""
"When?""
She didn't answer.
The silence was enough.
I looked at the documents.
The transfers.
The missing funds.
The lies.
Then I saw something else.
A signature.
A signature that didn't belong to Vanessa.
It belonged to Emily.
I pointed at it.
"Why did Emily sign this?""
Daniel's face changed.
"That's impossible.""
"Why?""
"Because Emily never approved those withdrawals.""
The room went cold.
I looked back at the document.
The signature was there.
But something was wrong.
The ink.
The date.
The handwriting.
Then Daniel whispered the words that changed everything.
May you like
"Someone forged Emily's signature.""
And suddenly, Vanessa wasn't the only person with a secret.
