Chapter 14: The Last Secret Emily Protected
The abandoned hospital wing looked exactly like a place where secrets belonged.
The hallway lights flickered.
The walls were empty.
The rooms were silent.
But twelve years earlier, this was where Emily held our newborn daughter for the first time.
This was where our family began.
And apparently...
Where someone tried to destroy it.
Daniel walked beside me.
Vanessa followed behind.
I almost told her to leave.
But I didn't.
Because for the first time, I needed everyone who knew the truth.
Including the people who had hidden it.
We reached the old records room.
The door was already open.
Robert was inside.
He looked older than the man in the photograph.
But his confidence was the same.
"Marcus.""
I stepped forward.
"Where is my daughter's file?""
He smiled.
"Still protective.""
"Answer me.""
Robert looked at Nia.
And that made me move in front of her.
"Don't look at her.""
He smiled.
"Emily said you would do that.""
My anger rose.
"You knew my wife.""
"I knew her better than you think.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"You manipulated her.""
Robert laughed.
"No.""
He looked around the room.
"Emily was intelligent. She saw the world clearly.""
"Then why did she hate you?""
His smile disappeared.
"She didn't hate me.""
A pause.
"She feared what I knew.""
He reached into a drawer.
And pulled out a folder.
Nia grabbed my hand.
Robert noticed.
"She really is just like Emily.""
"Give me the file.""
He looked at it.
"Do you know what Emily's biggest mistake was?""
I said nothing.
"She thought love could protect people.""
He placed the folder on the table.
"She thought if she was kind enough, everyone would become good.""
My eyes narrowed.
"What did you do?""
Robert looked at Vanessa.
"Ask her.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
Robert smiled.
"Tell him.""
I turned.
"Vanessa?""
She looked broken.
"I found out after Emily.""
"Found out what?""
She whispered:
"Robert changed Nia's records.""
My blood ran cold.
"Why?""
Robert answered.
"Because a child with no legal connection to anyone is easier to control.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"You tried to erase her.""
Robert smiled.
"I tried to protect my investment.""
The word made me sick.
"Investment?""
He looked at Nia.
"Her medical history.""
I understood.
He wasn't interested in money.
Not originally.
He was interested in information.
In control.
Emily discovered it.
And she became a threat.
"You caused all of this because Emily found out.""
Robert didn't deny it.
"She was going to expose me.""
"And you killed her?""
The room became silent.
Robert's expression changed.
Just slightly.
Enough.
Vanessa started crying.
"I didn't know.""
Robert looked at her.
"You knew enough.""
She stepped back.
"No.""
He turned toward me.
"Vanessa was weak.""
I looked at her.
The woman who had hurt my daughter.
The woman who had made terrible choices.
But also the woman who had been trapped.
Robert continued.
"She helped me because she thought she was saving her son.""
Vanessa whispered:
"But I wasn't.""
"No.""
Robert smiled.
"You were saving yourself.""
The words broke her.
Then he looked at me.
"Emily recorded everything.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
"She knew.""
He tapped the folder.
"She hid the final evidence.""
Daniel looked around.
"Where?""
Robert smiled.
"That's the problem.""
He stepped closer.
"Emily didn't trust any adult.""
His eyes moved to Nia.
"She trusted her daughter.""
Nia froze.
I looked at my daughter.
"What does that mean?""
Robert smiled.
"It means the final piece was never hidden.""
A long silence.
Then Nia slowly reached into her backpack.
Her face changed.
"I...""
Everyone looked at her.
She pulled out a small envelope.
"I found this years ago.""
My heart stopped.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because Vanessa told me it was nothing.""
Robert laughed.
May you like
And for the first time...
He looked afraid.
