Chapter 13: The Truth About Nia’s Birth
The message from Robert stayed on my phone screen all night.
*You have spent twelve years raising a child who was never supposed to survive.*
I hated those words.
Not because they scared me.
Because they were designed to hurt Nia.
And that was the one thing I would never forgive.
By morning, I had made one decision.
No more secrets.
No more adults deciding what my daughter could handle.
Nia deserved the truth.
Even if the truth was painful.
We met Daniel at his office, where he had stored the copies of Emily’s old records.
The room was small and quiet.
Too quiet.
Nia sat beside me, holding my hand.
Vanessa sat across from us.
For once, she didn't look like my wife.
She looked like someone waiting for judgment.
Daniel placed a folder on the table.
"I found this after Emily died.""
He opened it carefully.
Inside were medical records.
Birth documents.
Notes.
Everything connected to Nia.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why didn't you show me before?""
His face tightened.
"Because Emily asked me not to.""
My eyes narrowed.
"She asked you to hide this from me?""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"She asked me to protect Nia until she was old enough.""
I looked at my daughter.
She was listening.
Every word.
Daniel continued.
"Robert was a doctor at the hospital where Nia was born.""
I looked at the photograph.
The man standing beside Emily.
The man who had been part of our lives without me knowing.
"He delivered her.""
Daniel nodded.
"But he also had access to private records.""
"What did he find?""
Daniel looked at Nia.
Then at me.
"When Nia was born, there was a complication.""
My heart tightened.
"What kind of complication?""
"She stopped breathing.""
Nia's face changed.
I immediately held her hand tighter.
Daniel continued.
"Robert saved her.""
I looked at the photo.
"So why would he say she was never supposed to survive?""
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Because he believed he owned that moment.""
The room went silent.
"Robert became obsessed with controlling people who owed him something.""
Vanessa lowered her head.
Daniel looked at her.
"Especially people who were vulnerable.""
Vanessa whispered:
"He saved my son too.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She nodded.
"Robert was the doctor who treated my son.""
The pieces connected.
"He used that.""
She closed her eyes.
"He reminded me every time I questioned him.""
Daniel continued.
"Robert didn't just help people.""
He looked at the documents.
"He collected their secrets.""
I felt anger building.
"What secret did he have on Emily?""
Daniel opened another page.
"Before Emily died, she discovered Robert was altering medical and financial records.""
"Why?""
"Control.""
He pointed to the documents.
"He created problems, then positioned himself as the person who could solve them.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Your son.""
She nodded.
"He convinced me my son's treatment would stop if I didn't cooperate.""
Nia looked at her.
"Then why did you treat me like that?""
The question was quiet.
But it hurt more than anger.
Vanessa looked at my daughter.
"I don't know.""
Her voice broke.
"I think every time I looked at you, I saw the person who reminded me of what I had done.""
Nia looked away.
I wanted to defend her.
But I also wanted Vanessa to face what she caused.
"You made a child pay for your fear.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I know.""
Daniel pointed to another document.
"There is one more thing.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"Robert wasn't just hiding records.""
He placed a final paper on the table.
A transfer agreement.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
"What is this?""
Daniel's expression was serious.
"Robert tried to become Nia's legal guardian.""
The room froze.
"He what?""
"After Emily became sick, he filed paperwork claiming the family situation was unstable.""
My hands tightened.
"But Emily stopped him.""
Daniel nodded.
"She fought him.""
I looked at Nia.
Her eyes were full of tears.
"Mom protected me.""
I pulled her close.
"She always did.""
Then Daniel pointed at the bottom of the document.
"Look at the date.""
I did.
My stomach dropped.
The date was after Emily's death.
Robert was still trying.
Even after losing.
He was still trying to take my daughter.
Then my phone rang.
Robert.
I answered.
His voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
"Marcus.""
I said nothing.
"You finally learned the truth.""
"Stay away from my daughter.""
He laughed softly.
"Your daughter?""
A pause.
"That's what Emily wanted you to believe.""
I stood.
"Where are you?""
Another pause.
Then he said:
"Where this all began.""
The line went dead.
Daniel looked at me.
"What did he say?""
I grabbed my jacket.
May you like
"The hospital.""
And I knew the final answers were waiting where Nia's life had started.
