Chapter 10: The Woman Emily Trusted

The photograph from Robert stayed on my phone all night.

A hospital hallway.

A timestamp.

A shadow in the corner.

And one message that refused to leave my mind.

*Ask Vanessa why she was the last person Emily trusted before she died.*

I wanted to hate Vanessa.

Part of me believed I should.

She had lied.

She had taken money meant for Nia.

She had allowed my daughter to feel unwanted in her own home.

But that message created a new question.

Why would Emily trust the same woman who betrayed us?

The next morning, I found Vanessa sitting alone at the kitchen table.

No makeup.

No perfect clothes.

No confidence.

She looked like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

"Tell me everything.""

She looked up.

"Marcus...""

"No more half-truths.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know.""

I sat across from her.

"Why were you at the hospital?""

She looked down.

"Because Emily called me.""

I didn't move.

"Why?""

"Because she knew Robert was dangerous.""

I frowned.

"Then why didn't she call me?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Because she thought you would be in danger too.""

Those words hurt.

Because they sounded like something Emily would do.

She always protected people before herself.

"What happened that night?""

Vanessa took a deep breath.

"I went to see Emily after Robert threatened her.""

"Threatened her with what?""

"With Nia.""

The room became silent.

Vanessa continued.

"Robert knew about Emily's trust. He knew Nia would inherit everything. He wanted access.""

"And you?""

She looked ashamed.

"I helped him get close.""

My anger returned.

"You helped him?""

"Not because I wanted money.""

"Then why?""

She looked at me.

"Because he promised he could save my son.""

I remembered.

Her sick son.

The treatment.

The desperation.

"But he lied.""

She nodded.

"I found out too late.""

I stood.

"You still stole from my daughter.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Yes.""

The honesty surprised me.

"I did something terrible.""

She looked toward the stairs.

"Every time I saw Nia, I remembered what I did.""

I didn't say anything.

"I couldn't look at her.""

"That doesn't excuse treating her like she didn't matter.""

"I know.""

Her voice broke.

"I know.""

For the first time, Vanessa wasn't trying to defend herself.

She was admitting what she had become.

I looked at the hallway.

"Nia deserves the truth.""

Vanessa nodded.

"She does.""

Before I could say more, Daniel rushed through the front door.

His face was pale.

"Marcus.""

I turned.

"What happened?""

He held up his phone.

"Robert contacted me.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did he say?""

Daniel hesitated.

"He wants to meet.""

"Why?""

He looked at Vanessa.

"Because he knows we found the recording.""

I stepped closer.

"When?""

"Tonight.""

I looked at the clock.

"What does he want?""

Daniel's expression darkened.

"He wants the original box.""

I looked at the wooden box on the table.

"Why?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"Don't give it to him.""

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the box.

"There is something inside he doesn't know about.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What?""

She swallowed.

"Emily hid one more thing.""

I felt my heartbeat increase.

"What thing?""

Vanessa looked toward Nia's bedroom.

Then whispered:

"A letter.""

"Another letter?""

She nodded.

"One that was only for Nia.""

My chest tightened.

"Where is it?""

Vanessa's face changed.

"I don't know.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You expect us to believe that?""

"I saw Emily hide it.""

"Where?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"In the one place Robert would never search.""

I waited.

Then she said:

"Inside Nia's old teddy bear.""

I immediately looked upstairs.

Nia.

Her childhood teddy bear.

The one she kept since she was little.

The one Emily gave her.

I ran upstairs.

Nia was sitting on her bed.

When she saw my face, she stood.

"Dad?""

I picked up the old stuffed bear from her shelf.

"Nia, did you ever open this?""

She looked confused.

"No.""

I carefully checked the seams.

Then I found something.

A small hidden zipper.

Nia gasped.

"What is that?""

I opened it.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

And one final sentence written on the outside.

*For my daughter, when she is old enough to know who tried to steal her future.*

I looked at Nia.

May you like

Then at the letter.

And I knew Emily had been waiting for this moment.
