Chapter 6: The Hidden Recording
The envelope sat on the table for almost a minute.
Nobody touched it.
Not me.
Not Vanessa.
Not Daniel.
Not even Nia.
It felt like opening it would change everything.
Finally, Nia reached for my hand.
"Dad.""
I looked at her.
"Whatever is inside...""
Her voice shook.
"Please don't leave me.""
Those words broke something inside me.
I knelt beside her.
"Never.""
She searched my face.
"Promise?""
I held her hand.
"I promise.""
Only then did I open the envelope.
Inside was a small memory card.
And a note.
Marcus,
If you are seeing this, it means the people around you have started telling their version of the story.
Listen to mine first.
My hands tightened around the note.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
"Emily recorded something.""
Vanessa took a step back.
"No.""
Everyone looked at her.
She realized what she had said.
Too late.
"You knew?""
I asked.
She stayed silent.
Daniel looked furious.
"She knew exactly what was in there.""
I inserted the memory card into my laptop.
For a few seconds, nothing happened.
Then Emily appeared on the screen.
My breath disappeared.
She looked weaker than I remembered.
But she was smiling.
"Nia," she said softly.
The room became still.
"If you're watching this, my beautiful girl, I need you to know something.""
Nia covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
Emily continued.
"None of this was your fault.""
I looked down.
My daughter was crying silently.
Then Emily looked directly into the camera.
"Marcus, I need you to listen carefully.""
My heart started beating faster.
"Vanessa will try to convince you that you made mistakes. She will show you documents. She will show you numbers.""
The video paused for a second.
Then Emily continued.
"But she won't show you the one thing that matters.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"What?""
Emily's voice became softer.
"The truth about Nia's birth.""
I looked at my daughter.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
There it was.
The secret.
The one everyone had been hiding.
Emily continued.
"Marcus, Nia is your daughter.""
I exhaled.
A wave of relief rushed through me.
But then Emily said something that made my blood run cold.
"However, the person who has been protecting her identity all these years is not who you think.""
The screen flickered.
A new image appeared.
A hospital document.
A name.
A signature.
I leaned closer.
"What is that?""
Daniel whispered:
"No...""
I looked at him.
"You know this?""
He didn't answer.
On the recording, Emily spoke again.
"I discovered Vanessa was searching for something from Nia's past.""
The video showed another document.
A birth record.
A second name.
A connection I had never seen.
Then Emily said:
"Because Nia wasn't the only child whose life Vanessa changed.""
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then the laptop made a sound.
A new file appeared.
Created six years ago.
The file name was simple.
Vanessa's Secret.
And underneath it was a message.
May you like
One sentence.
The truth will destroy the family she built.
