Chapter 11: The Letter to Nia

Nia sat beside me on the bed.

She held the teddy bear tightly.

Like it was the last piece of her mother she had left.

I held the letter.

But I couldn't open it.

Not because I didn't want the truth.

Because I was afraid of what it would do to her.

"Dad?""

I looked at her.

"Yeah?""

"Is Mom going to tell me something bad?""

My heart broke.

"No.""

She looked at the letter.

"Then why are you scared?""

Because I was.

Because adults had failed her.

Because every secret we uncovered was another wound she had to carry.

I sat beside her.

"Your mom loved you more than anything.""

Nia nodded.

"I know.""

"Whatever this says, remember that.""

She took my hand.

"Read it.""

I opened the paper.

Emily's handwriting filled the page.

My sweet Nia,

If you are reading this, you are older now.

Older than I ever imagined.

I stopped.

Nia wiped her eyes.

I continued.

There are things I wanted to tell you myself, but life does not always allow us the time we deserve.

First, I need you to know this.

You were never unwanted.

Not for one second.

I looked at Nia.

She was crying quietly.

The letter continued.

When you were born, I made a promise to protect you.

Not because you were special because of your blood.

Not because of money.

Because you were my daughter.

I took a breath.

Then came the part Emily had hidden.

Marcus is your father.

The relief on Nia's face was immediate.

She covered her mouth.

"Dad...""

I pulled her close.

"I know.""

She cried against me.

But I kept reading.

However, Vanessa discovered something about your birth records that Robert wanted.

Something that could hurt you.

I frowned.

Birth records?

The letter continued.

When I was pregnant with you, I learned that Robert was involved in illegal financial schemes through the hospital foundation.

He used families' private information to control them.

Including Vanessa.

I looked up.

Daniel was reading over my shoulder.

His expression changed.

"That's why.""

"What?""

He pointed at the letter.

"Robert wasn't after the trust first.""

I looked confused.

"He was after information.""

I continued reading.

Vanessa was scared because Robert knew about her past.

He used her son's illness against her.

He convinced her she needed to help him.

But Vanessa was not the person who started this.

I stopped.

I looked at Vanessa downstairs.

For years, I thought I understood her.

I thought she was simply cruel.

But Emily saw something else.

Someone broken.

The letter continued.

Marcus, please don't let anger decide what happens next.

Protect Nia.

Protect yourself.

And remember...

The people who hurt us are not always the people who hate us.

Sometimes they are the people who are too afraid to fight back.

I finished reading.

Nia was silent.

Then she asked:

"Did Vanessa really help Mom?""

I didn't answer immediately.

"I think she tried.""

Nia looked down.

"But she still hurt me.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

That was the truth.

Both things could exist together.

A person could be afraid.

A person could be manipulated.

And a person could still cause pain.

Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?""

He listened.

Then looked at me.

"Robert isn't meeting us tonight.""

"Why?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Because he already has someone.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Toward Nia.

"He has Emily's original hospital records.""

I stood.

"How?""

Daniel's voice lowered.

"Because someone gave them to him.""

The room went silent.

Vanessa appeared at the doorway.

Her face was pale.

"I didn't.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel showed us the message.

A photo.

A document.

May you like

And one sentence.

*Thank you for bringing me the last piece, Vanessa.*
