Chapter 3: The Secret Emily Left Behind

I didn't sleep that night.

Vanessa's words repeated in my head until sunrise.

Ask your daughter who her real father is.

It was the kind of sentence that could destroy a family in seconds.

But I refused to believe it.

Not because I trusted Vanessa.

Because I trusted Emily.

Emily had been the most honest person I had ever known.

The next morning, I found Vanessa sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked exhausted.

But she wasn't scared anymore.

She looked prepared.

That bothered me.

"Tell me what you meant.""

She slowly stirred her coffee.

"I think you already know.""

"No, Vanessa. I don't.""

She sighed.

"Emily wasn't perfect.""

I slammed my hand on the table.

"Don't talk about her like that.""

Vanessa looked up.

"See? That's the problem. You put Emily on a pedestal.""

"She was Nia's mother.""

"And she kept secrets.""

I stared at her.

"What secrets?""

Vanessa leaned back.

"Before Emily died, she found out something.""

My hands tightened.

"What?""

She looked directly at me.

"That Nia wasn't yours.""

The room went silent.

For a moment, I couldn't even breathe.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind couldn't accept it.

"You're lying.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Am I?""

I walked away before I said something I would regret.

But the doubt had already entered.

And doubt was dangerous.

That afternoon, I found Nia sitting in the backyard.

She was holding an old photograph.

When she saw me, she quickly hid it.

"What is that?""

She hesitated.

Then handed it to me.

It was Emily.

Young.

Smiling.

Holding baby Nia.

But there was something written on the back.

A date.

And a name.

A name I didn't recognize.

"Nia," I whispered.

"Who is this?""

Her face changed.

She looked terrified.

"I wasn't supposed to tell you.""

My heart dropped.

"Tell me what?""

She looked toward the house.

"Mom told me if something happened to her, I should only show this to you when I was old enough.""

I sat down beside her.

"Show me.""

With trembling hands, Nia reached into her backpack.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was old.

Worn.

Carefully protected.

"I found it inside Mom's old book," she said.

I opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Emily's.

My hands began shaking.

Marcus,

If you're reading this, something happened before I could explain everything.

Please don't hate Nia.

She deserves love more than anyone.

I looked at my daughter.

Then continued reading.

The next line made my heart stop.

Because it wasn't an apology.

It was a warning.

Vanessa knows the truth.

I looked up.

"Nia...""

But my daughter was crying.

"Dad, I didn't want to tell you.""

I pulled her close.

"Tell me everything.""

She shook her head.

"I don't know everything.""

"Then what do you know?""

She wiped her tears.

"Vanessa wasn't supposed to be our family.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What does that mean?""

Nia looked at the house.

"Mom said Vanessa came into our lives because she wanted something.""

Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

I answered.

Her voice sounded different.

Panicked.

"Marcus...""

"What?""

"You need to come home.""

"Why?""

There was silence.

Then she whispered:

"Because someone else knows about the box.""

I stood up.

"Who?""

Her voice trembled.

And the answer she gave changed everything.

"Emily's brother.""

The call ended.

May you like

And for the first time, I wondered if the secret Vanessa had hidden wasn't just about my daughter.

Maybe it was about the person who had been manipulating our family from the beginning.
