Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew the Truth

Emily's brother, Daniel, arrived twenty minutes later.

He didn't knock.

He walked through the front door like someone who had done it a hundred times before.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Angry.

Carrying years of frustration on his face.

His eyes immediately found the wooden box on the table.

"You finally opened it.""

I stood up.

"You knew about this?""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"I knew she would hide it.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Careful, Daniel.""

He laughed bitterly.

"Still threatening people after all these years?""

Nia came down the stairs.

The moment Daniel saw her, his expression softened.

"Nia.""

She froze.

"You knew my mom.""

He nodded.

"I knew her better than anyone.""

I looked between them.

"Someone explain what is happening.""

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

"Emily found out Vanessa was taking things from her.""

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

"What things?""

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were copies of bank records.

Documents.

Receipts.

"I told Emily something was wrong.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

Daniel ignored her.

"After Emily got sick, Vanessa started controlling everything.""

I looked at the papers.

"Controlling what?""

"The money Emily left for Nia.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Emily left money?""

Daniel nodded.

"A trust.""

My stomach dropped.

"How much?""

He looked at me.

"Enough to pay for Nia's education. Enough to make sure she never had to worry.""

I turned slowly.

"Vanessa.""

She looked defensive.

"Marcus, listen.""

"No.""

My voice was quiet.

"How much did you take?""

Her expression changed.

"I didn't take anything.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Then why did the account disappear?""

Vanessa looked at him with hatred.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I spent six years trying to prove it.""

He pointed at the folder.

"Emily knew someone was moving money.""

I looked at the documents.

The dates.

The transfers.

The signatures.

Something felt wrong.

Because one name kept appearing.

Not Vanessa's.

Mine.

I stared.

"Why is my name here?""

Nobody spoke.

My hands went cold.

Daniel looked at me.

"Because that's the part Emily was afraid to tell you.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

But I couldn't tell if they were real.

"I didn't want you to find out this way.""

"Find out what?""

She whispered:

"Emily knew the money was being moved.""

"By who?""

Vanessa looked down.

Then said:

"By you.""

The room went silent.

Nia gasped.

"No.""

I turned toward her.

"Nia...""

She shook her head.

"My dad wouldn't do that.""

Those words hurt.

Because they showed me how much she trusted me.

And how badly I needed to understand what was happening.

Daniel looked at me carefully.

"Marcus, before you accuse Vanessa or defend yourself, you need to see the last thing Emily left.""

"What?""

He reached into the box.

Underneath the necklace was another envelope.

One I hadn't noticed.

It had only three words written on the front.

Open after truth.

My hands trembled as I picked it up.

May you like

Because I knew whoever Emily wrote this for...

She expected them to be the person who broke our family apart.
