Chapter 9: The Visitor in Room 417

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa's confession hung in the air.

Daniel had been in Danielle's hospital room.

And someone else had been there too.

Robert slowly closed the folder.

"Vanessa, I need you to tell us exactly what you know.""

She sat down.

Her hands were shaking so badly that the chair scraped against the floor.

"Seven years ago, Daniel asked me to retrieve a copy of the security footage from the hospital's internal system.""

"Why?"" I asked.

"He said there had been a problem with Danielle's room assignment. He wanted to make sure nobody had entered without authorization.""

I stared at her.

"That was a lie?""

She nodded.

"What did the footage show?""

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

He was standing near the door, his face expressionless.

"Daniel entered Danielle's room at 9:42 p.m.""

I closed my eyes.

I remembered that night.

I'd been at home because the nurses insisted I go rest. Danielle had been stable, and Daniel had offered to sit with her for an hour.

I had thanked him.

I'd even told him to call if anything changed.

"Who else entered?"" Robert asked.

Vanessa swallowed.

"A woman.""

"Who?""

"I couldn't identify her at first. She wore a hospital coat and had a mask covering most of her face.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Enough.""

Robert ignored him.

"Continue.""

Vanessa's voice became barely audible.

"The woman stayed for eleven minutes. Daniel left shortly afterward.""

"What did she do?""

"I couldn't see clearly from the footage. But she placed something on the bedside table.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"What was it?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Then why did you destroy the recording?""

She looked at me.

"Because Daniel told me the footage would make it look like he had done something wrong. He said the woman was a doctor who had been helping with Danielle's treatment.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Did you personally destroy the original footage?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"How?""

"I deleted the archived file.""

"Was there a backup?""

She hesitated.

"I thought there wasn't.""

Daniel suddenly spoke.

"There wasn't.""

Robert turned toward him.

"How do you know?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Vanessa looked up.

"Because you told me you had already checked.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Robert stood.

"I want both of you to understand something. Any evidence connected to a possible alteration of medical records or suspicious access to a patient's room needs to be preserved. You should not delete, modify, or conceal anything else.""

Daniel grabbed his briefcase.

"You're making accusations without proof.""

Robert remained calm.

"Then you should have no reason to fear an investigation.""

Daniel walked out.

Vanessa stayed seated.

I looked at her.

"Why did you marry me?""

She began crying again.

"Michael...""

"Was it ever real?""

She covered her face.

"I loved you.""

"Then why did you help him steal from my son?""

"I thought we could fix everything.""

"By putting my name on a fraudulent loan?""

She didn't answer.

I looked at Ethan.

He was staring at the photograph of Danielle.

"Let's go home, son.""

As we reached the elevator, Vanessa called after us.

"Michael, please. Don't leave me here.""

I stopped.

"You can arrange somewhere else to stay. Robert will contact you about the documents and the investigation.""

She stood.

"You're throwing me out?""

I looked at her.

"You charged my child rent in his own home. You lied about a mortgage. You helped prepare a loan using my forged signature. And now you're asking me not to leave you?""

She lowered her head.

I pressed the elevator button.

Ethan stood beside me.

Then he said something quietly.

"Dad, I don't want her to go to jail.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because I don't want to spend the rest of my life thinking about this.""

I put my hand on his shoulder.

"You don't have to decide what happens to her. That's not your responsibility.""

The elevator doors opened.

We went home.

That evening, Robert called.

"Michael, I spoke with the hospital's former security director.""

"What did he say?""

"There may be a backup copy of the recording.""

I sat down.

"Where?""

"An off-site archive. Apparently, the hospital retained certain security files for legal compliance.""

My heart began racing.

"Can they retrieve it?""

"They're checking.""

"Robert, I need to know who was in that room.""

"So do I.""

He paused.

"There's something else.""

I closed my eyes.

"What now?""

"The hospital's original access records show that the woman who entered Danielle's room wasn't listed as a doctor.""

"Then who was she?""

"She was a private medical consultant hired through a company Daniel controlled.""

I stared at the wall.

"What's the company's name?""

"Westbridge Medical Consulting.""

I had never heard of it.

Robert continued.

"There's a registered director connected to the company. Her name is Evelyn Carter.""

Carter.

Vanessa's maiden name.

I stood up.

"Is she related to Vanessa?""

Robert didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"She's Vanessa's older sister.""

I felt the room tilt.

"Her sister?""

"Yes. And according to the records, Evelyn received several payments from Daniel's company shortly before Danielle died.""

I looked toward Ethan.

He was sitting at the kitchen table, trying to complete a college assignment.

His mother's photograph stood beside his laptop.

I lowered my voice.

"Robert, find her.""

"We're already trying.""

I ended the call.

For nearly an hour, I sat alone in the kitchen.

Then an unfamiliar number appeared on my phone.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice whispered:

"Michael Williams?""

"Yes. Who is this?""

"My name is Evelyn Carter.""

I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.

"How did you get my number?""

"Your wife gave it to me years ago.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What do you want?""

She began crying.

"I saw the news about the investigation. I know Daniel is going to blame me.""

I gripped the phone.

"Tell me what happened in my wife's hospital room.""

There was a long silence.

Then Evelyn said:

"I was the woman who entered Room 417.""

My knees weakened.

"What did you do?""

"I didn't give Danielle anything. I swear.""

"Then why were you there?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Because Daniel told me Danielle had already signed an authorization to change her medication.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you believe him?""

"At first.""

"And later?""

Her voice broke.

"Later, I realized the signature was forged.""

I could barely speak.

"Did you report it?""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because Daniel threatened me.""

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

"What did he threaten you with?""

She whispered:

"He said if I told anyone, he would show them the original recording of what happened in that room.""

I froze.

"Original recording? I thought it was security footage.""

"No, Michael. I'm talking about something else.""

My heart pounded.

"What else was there?""

Evelyn began sobbing.

Then she said:

"Your wife knew she was being recorded. She asked me to turn on the recorder before Daniel arrived.""

I looked at the old digital recorder on the table.

"Where is it?""

"I don't have it anymore.""

"Who does?""

Her answer came slowly.

"Daniel.""

Then she added something that made the hair rise on my arms.

"And Michael, your wife didn't just record a warning. She recorded a confession.""

I stared at the phone.

"Whose confession?""

Evelyn whispered:

"Daniel's. He told Danielle exactly why he needed her to die before Ethan turned eighteen.""

The call suddenly disconnected.

A second later, a message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

A photograph of Danielle in her hospital bed.

And beside her stood Daniel.

But what caught my attention was the date printed beneath the image.

It was taken four days after the hospital officially recorded her death.

I enlarged the photograph.

Then I noticed Danielle's hand.

She was wearing her wedding ring.

And her fingers were wrapped around a piece of paper.

May you like

A paper with three words written in her handwriting.

*HE IS NOT DEAD.*
