Chapter 3: The Secret in Danielle's Will
I read Daniel's message three times.
Whatever you found, don't let Ethan see the original documents.
My brother had not even arrived yet.
And somehow, he already knew what was in my hands.
I turned the phone toward Vanessa.
"How does Daniel know what I've found?""
She pressed her lips together.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"I'm not!""
I held up the message.
"Then explain this.""
Vanessa sank onto the sofa.
Madison stood near the staircase, crying silently.
For the first time, she looked less like a spoiled young woman and more like someone who had been pulled into something she didn't understand.
I placed the papers on the coffee table.
"Madison, come here.""
She hesitated.
"Please," I said.
"I need you to tell me the truth.""
She slowly approached.
"Did you know about this loan?""
She nodded.
"Mom said it was temporary.""
"Did you know my signature was on it?""
Madison looked down.
"I thought you'd signed it.""
"I didn't.""
Her eyes widened.
"Mom said Uncle Daniel handled everything.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Who signed my name?""
She began shaking her head.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Your daughter just told me Daniel handled everything.""
"Daniel said it was legal!""
"Then why did he tell me not to show the original documents to Ethan?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
I picked up the photocopy of Danielle's document.
The heading read:
*LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF DANIELLE WILLIAMS.*
My hands started trembling.
I remembered the hospital room.
The smell of antiseptic.
The soft beeping of the machines.
Danielle's fingers wrapped around mine while she struggled to speak.
She'd been sick for months, but she'd remained determined to protect Ethan.
I'd asked her if there was anything else I needed to know.
She'd smiled weakly.
"Just take care of our boy, Michael.""
I'd promised.
I had no idea that promise would become the most important thing I'd ever made.
Now, seven years later, I was staring at a document bearing her name that I had never seen before.
"Where is the original will?"" I asked.
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
"I don't know.""
"Who has it?""
"I said I don't know!""
I took out my phone and called our family attorney, Robert Hayes.
He answered after two rings.
"Michael? Everything all right?""
"Robert, I need you to check something for me. Danielle's will. The original documents. Who currently holds them?""
There was a pause.
"Why are you asking?""
"Because I just found a loan application using my forged signature and a document transferring ownership of my house.""
Robert's voice changed immediately.
"Don't sign anything. Don't give anyone those papers. And don't confront anyone without preserving the documents.""
"Robert, was the house left to Ethan?""
Silence.
Then he said, "Michael, where did you get that information?""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Apparently, my wife and brother have been hiding it.""
Robert exhaled slowly.
"Danielle made arrangements before she died. We need to discuss those privately.""
"Was Ethan the beneficiary?""
"Yes.""
My knees nearly buckled.
"Then why is the house in my son's name without my knowledge?""
"Because Danielle specifically requested that ownership pass to Ethan through a trust. You were appointed to manage the property until he reached adulthood.""
I looked toward the staircase.
Ethan had been eighteen for months.
"Was the trust supposed to transfer control to him at eighteen?""
"Yes. Subject to the terms in the trust document.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"Who was appointed as the alternate trustee?""
Robert paused.
"Your brother, Daniel.""
Everything suddenly made sense.
Daniel hadn't simply been helping me manage paperwork.
He had been given a position of trust over my son's inheritance.
"Robert, did Danielle leave any instructions concerning Daniel?""
Another pause.
"She did.""
"What instructions?""
"I'd rather not discuss them over the phone. But I need you to understand something, Michael. Danielle was very specific about protecting Ethan from financial pressure.""
I looked at the bank statements.
Six thousand dollars.
Then the extra twelve hundred.
And the loan application.
"Was Vanessa involved in the trust?""
"No.""
"Was she entitled to any part of the property?""
"No.""
I closed my eyes.
"Thank you. I'm coming to your office tomorrow.""
"Bring every document you've found. And Michael?""
"Yes?""
"Do not let Daniel take anything from that house.""
I ended the call.
Vanessa was staring at me.
"What did he say?""
I didn't answer immediately.
Instead, I looked at Madison.
"Did your mother tell you that Ethan was the owner of this house?""
Madison nodded.
"She said he couldn't manage it himself. She said the house would eventually belong to me because Mom and Uncle Daniel had paid for things.""
I frowned.
"Paid for what?""
"Repairs. Taxes. Maintenance.""
I almost laughed again.
I had paid every property tax bill and every repair invoice since Danielle died.
"Madison, did you ever see any receipts?""
She shook her head.
Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.
"There's something else.""
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"Madison, put that away.""
Madison ignored her.
She opened a folder of screenshots.
"Uncle Daniel sent Mom these messages. I wasn't supposed to keep them, but I took screenshots.""
She handed me the phone.
The first message was dated eight months earlier.
Daniel: Start collecting rent from Ethan. We need to establish that he can't afford the property.
Vanessa: What if Michael finds out?
Daniel: He won't. Keep telling him it's household money.
The next message was even worse.
Daniel: Once Ethan misses enough payments, we'll have grounds to transfer control. The loan will cover the rest.
I felt sick.
They hadn't simply been taking money from my son.
They had been creating a financial record to make him look incapable of managing his inheritance.
I scrolled further.
Then I found a message dated three days earlier.
Daniel: The signature is ready. We just need Michael to approve the final paperwork.
Vanessa: And if he refuses?
Daniel: Then we use the recording.
I stopped scrolling.
"What recording?""
Madison looked at her mother.
Vanessa's face had become completely white.
"Michael, please," she whispered.
"You need to listen to me before you do anything.""
I looked at the clock.
Twenty-three minutes had passed since Daniel promised to arrive.
A car pulled into the driveway.
Headlights swept across the living room curtains.
Then came three sharp knocks at the front door.
I walked toward it.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
"Don't open that door.""
I looked down at her hand.
"Why?""
She released me.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"Because Daniel isn't coming here to explain anything.""
I opened the door.
My brother stood outside holding a leather briefcase.
He looked past me at the papers scattered across the coffee table.
Then he looked at Madison's phone.
His expression hardened.
"Mike," he said quietly.
"We need to talk.""
I stepped aside.
"You're right, Daniel.""
He entered.
I closed the door behind him.
Then I held up the printed message about the recording.
"Before we talk about the money, tell me what you did to my wife before she died.""
For the first time in my life, my younger brother looked afraid.
He placed his briefcase on the table.
May you like
And said six words that changed everything.
"Danielle wasn't supposed to survive that surgery.""
