Chapter 13: The Secret Inside the Piano
Ethan hadn't touched his mother's piano in seven years.
It stood against the wall in his bedroom, beneath the window overlooking the backyard. Danielle had bought it when he was eight because he'd begged for music lessons after watching a pianist perform at a school concert.
He'd stopped playing after she died.
Now, according to his grandfather, it contained the evidence that could finally expose everyone who had betrayed her.
We arrived home shortly before midnight.
Ethan walked straight upstairs.
I followed him.
The piano looked exactly as I remembered it. Its dark wooden surface was covered with a thin layer of dust. A small photograph of Danielle sat beside the music stand.
Ethan picked it up.
"She used to sit here with me every Saturday," he whispered.
"I remember.""
"She said I had terrible rhythm.""
I smiled faintly.
"She said you had potential.""
He laughed through his tears.
Then he put the photograph down.
"Let's find it.""
We examined the piano carefully.
There was nothing unusual about the keyboard or the pedals. I checked underneath, then behind it.
Ethan remembered something.
"Mom always told me never to open the bottom panel.""
I crouched beside the piano.
There was a narrow wooden panel beneath the keyboard. Two small screws held it in place.
I fetched a screwdriver.
After removing the screws, the panel came loose.
Inside was a small metal box.
Ethan pulled it out.
It was locked.
A handwritten label was attached to the lid.
*For Ethan. Open when you are eighteen.*
His hands began trembling.
"She knew," he whispered.
I sat beside him.
"She knew someone might try to take what belonged to you.""
The box had a combination lock.
Three numbers.
Ethan stared at them.
Then he smiled sadly.
"Mom's birthday.""
He entered the date.
The lock clicked.
Inside were three USB drives, a small envelope, and a folded photograph.
The envelope contained a handwritten letter.
Ethan opened it.
The first line made him cry.
My beautiful boy, if you're reading this, then you're old enough to understand why I had to hide these things.
He continued reading aloud.
I hope you've grown into a kind man. I hope your father has taught you that doing the right thing isn't always easy. Most importantly, I hope nobody has convinced you that you are less deserving of love because of what happened to me.
Ethan stopped.
He pressed the letter against his chest.
I looked away, giving him a moment.
After a while, he continued.
The house is yours. I left it to you because I wanted you to have a safe place, no matter what happened to the adults around you. Your father will protect it until you are old enough to understand your rights.
At the bottom was another sentence.
If Uncle Daniel ever tries to take the house, ask your father to play USB number three.
We looked at each other.
I picked up the drives.
The first contained financial records.
The second contained scanned legal documents.
The third contained a video.
I inserted it into my laptop.
A familiar image appeared.
Danielle was sitting in the same hospital room shown in the earlier recording.
She looked exhausted, but her eyes were clear.
"Michael," she began, "I need you to know that I found the transfers.""
She held up several bank statements.
"Daniel has been moving money out of the family investment accounts. I confronted him, and he admitted that he used some of it to cover losses from his business.""
She paused.
"I asked him to return everything. He promised he would. But yesterday, I discovered that the amount was much larger than he told me.""
A new document appeared on screen.
The total was $247,000.
Ethan leaned forward.
"That's almost a quarter of a million dollars.""
I nodded.
Danielle continued.
"I also discovered that Daniel obtained copies of Michael's identification and financial documents. He has been using them to authorize transfers without Michael's knowledge.""
My stomach tightened.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Michael, I never signed any amendment giving Vanessa or Daniel ownership of this house. Ethan is the sole beneficiary.""
Then her expression changed.
"There is something else. Daniel told me that he had a solution. He said he could arrange a new loan against the property and use the money to replace what he had taken.""
She shook her head.
"I refused.""
A door opened somewhere outside the camera's view.
Danielle looked toward it.
Then she whispered:
"If Daniel discovers this recording, he will destroy it.""
The video continued.
"I have asked someone I trust to preserve copies of the financial records. His name is—"
The screen went black.
I stared at it.
"Who was she going to name?""
Ethan checked the other files.
One folder was labeled *TRUSTEE COMMUNICATIONS*.
Inside were dozens of emails.
We opened the earliest one.
It was from Danielle to Robert.
Robert, please keep the following information confidential. Daniel has begun approaching Michael about refinancing the house. I believe he intends to use Michael's signature without permission.
The next email contained a name.
Not Vanessa.
Not Evelyn.
Someone else.
*Richard Coleman.*
I frowned.
"Who is Richard Coleman?""
Ethan searched the name in the documents.
A scanned business agreement appeared.
Richard Coleman was listed as the owner of a company called Westbridge Financial Services.
The same company connected to Daniel's medical consulting payments.
But there was another detail.
Richard's signature appeared on a document authorizing Daniel to access my financial records.
I suddenly remembered a man who had visited our house several times after Danielle died.
He'd introduced himself as Daniel's business partner.
I'd shaken his hand.
I'd offered him coffee.
I'd even discussed my retirement savings with him.
I felt sick.
Ethan opened another file.
It was an audio recording.
The date was two days before Danielle's final hospitalization.
A man's voice came through the speakers.
Daniel.
"We need the signature before she changes the trust.""
Another voice responded.
Richard.
"Michael won't approve it.""
Daniel laughed.
"Michael signs whatever I put in front of him.""
Richard asked, "And if Danielle finds out?""
Daniel answered:
"She won't have time to stop us.""
The recording ended.
I sat motionless.
Then Ethan opened the final folder.
A scanned copy of a letter appeared.
It was addressed to Robert.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: PROTECT MICHAEL AND ETHAN.*
At the bottom was Danielle's signature.
But beneath it was a handwritten note.
If I don't survive this, the person who knows the full truth is already inside our family.
I looked at Ethan.
"Your mother knew more than we thought.""
He nodded.
Then his laptop chimed.
A new email had arrived.
It was from an address we didn't recognize.
There was no subject.
Only one sentence.
You found the piano, but you haven't found what Danielle buried beneath the house.
Ethan looked at me.
I felt a chill run down my spine.
Because attached to the email was a photograph of our backyard.
May you like
And in the photograph, someone was standing beside Danielle's old rose garden.
Holding a shovel.
