Chapter 2: The Money That Never Reached the Bank

"That transfer was a misunderstanding.""

Vanessa said it so quickly that I almost missed the words.

I held my phone up.

"Twelve hundred dollars, Vanessa. Explain it.""

She reached for the phone.

I pulled it away.

"Give me that.""

"No.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Michael, you're making a scene.""

I glanced around the living room.

There were no guests. No neighbors. No audience.

Just my wife, her daughter somewhere upstairs, and the truth sitting between us.

"Where did Ethan's twelve hundred dollars go?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Madison needed help.""

"With what?""

"Her car insurance. Her credit card. A few things.""

"Then why did you tell Ethan it was for the mortgage?""

She looked toward the staircase.

"Because he wouldn't have paid otherwise.""

The admission hit me harder than any excuse could have.

I stared at her.

"You lied to my son.""

"I was going to pay him back!""

"When?""

"When things settled down.""

"Which things?""

She threw her hands up.

"Oh, for heaven's sake, Michael! You're acting like I robbed a bank. He's your son.

He has a job. He can earn more money.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"He works twenty-five hours a week while attending school.""

"And Madison has needs too!""

I shook my head.

"Why aren't you paying for those needs?""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"Because I have expenses!""

"What expenses? I pay the electricity, water, groceries, property taxes, and insurance. My salary covers this household.""

She looked away.

I took another step forward.

"Show me your bank statements.""

Her head snapped around.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

"You don't get to interrogate me.""

"Then tell me where the money went.""

She grabbed the television remote and turned the volume up.

I walked over and switched the television off.

"Don't do that.""

Vanessa threw the remote onto the sofa.

"You've changed, Michael.""

"No. I'm finally asking questions.""

A few seconds later, Madison appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

She was holding her phone with both hands.

"Mom, can I talk to you?""

"Not now," Vanessa snapped.

Madison looked at me.

"Mr. Williams—"

"You're allowed to call me Michael, Madison. I've been in your life for six years.""

She lowered her eyes.

"Mom said Ethan was supposed to pay for the mortgage because he inherited the house.""

I froze.

"What did you just say?""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Madison, stop talking.""

But Madison continued.

"She said the house was supposed to be his, but you were keeping everything under your name until he became responsible.""

I stared at my stepdaughter.

"Who told you that?""

"Mom.""

Vanessa grabbed her daughter's wrist.

"Upstairs. Now.""

Madison pulled away.

"Why? It's true!""

"You're making things worse!""

I raised my hand.

"Nobody is going upstairs until someone explains what is happening.""

Madison looked frightened.

Then she said something that made my stomach drop.

"Uncle Daniel told us not to mention the inheritance.""

My younger brother.

Daniel.

The man who had helped me handle paperwork after Danielle died.

The man who had sat beside me at her funeral and promised that Ethan would always be protected.

"What inheritance?"" I asked.

Vanessa's lips parted.

Madison looked at her mother.

"Mom?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

I turned toward my wife.

"Why is my brother discussing my son's inheritance with you?""

She started crying.

Not quietly.

She covered her face and began sobbing, shaking her shoulders as though I'd done something terrible to her.

For years, I'd believed Vanessa was simply emotional when confronted.

Now I wondered whether the tears were another way to stop people from asking questions.

"Michael, please," she whispered.

"You don't understand.""

"Then help me understand.""

"I was trying to protect everyone.""

"From what?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Daniel said the arrangements were complicated. He said Danielle had made certain promises before she died.""

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

"Danielle never made promises to Daniel about this house.""

Vanessa looked down.

"That's what you think.""

I reached into my pocket and called my brother.

It rang four times.

Then he answered.

"Hey, Mike. What's going on?""

His voice was casual.

Almost cheerful.

"Daniel, I need you to come over.""

A pause.

"Everything okay?""

"No. I want to discuss Ethan's money and Danielle's inheritance.""

The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.

Then Daniel said, "Who told you about that?""

I looked directly at Vanessa.

"Interesting question.""

"Mike, listen to me. Don't make any decisions until we talk privately.""

"Come over.""

"I can't tonight.""

"Why?""

"I've got an appointment.""

I almost smiled.

"Then cancel it.""

Another pause.

Finally, he said, "Fine. I'll be there in thirty minutes.""

I ended the call.

Vanessa was staring at me.

"Why did you call him?""

"Because apparently my brother knows more about my wife's inheritance than I do.""

She shook her head.

"You shouldn't have done that.""

"Why?""

"Because Daniel won't forgive you for accusing him.""

I looked at her.

"I'm not worried about Daniel forgiving me.""

Then I noticed a folded envelope sticking out of the magazine rack beside the television.

It had Ethan's name written on the front.

I pulled it out.

Vanessa lunged forward.

"Michael, don't!""

I stepped back and opened it.

Inside was a bank statement, a printed loan application, and a photocopy of a document bearing Danielle's name.

The loan application listed a proposed amount of $180,000.

The collateral was our house.

The borrower was me.

And at the bottom was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

Almost.

I had never signed it.

I turned the page.

There was another name listed under co-borrower.

Madison.

And beneath that name was a third signature.

Daniel Williams.

My younger brother.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What have you done?""

She backed away.

Then Madison began crying.

"Mom, you told me he wouldn't find out until after the papers were signed!""

Vanessa spun toward her.

"Shut your mouth!""

But I was already reading the next page.

It wasn't a loan agreement.

It was a proposed transfer of ownership.

The current owner was listed as Ethan Williams.

The proposed new owners were Madison Williams and Daniel Williams.

My son had apparently been the legal owner of the house for years.

And nobody had told him.

I slowly lowered the papers.

"Vanessa, where did you get these?""

She said nothing.

Then my phone vibrated again.

A message from Daniel appeared.

Mike, whatever you found, don't let Ethan see the original documents.

I looked at the screen.

May you like

Then at Vanessa.

And suddenly, I understood that the problem was much bigger than stolen rent.
