Chapter 8: The Signature That Exposed Everything
Vanessa stood in the doorway, clutching a brown envelope.
Her eyes moved from me to Daniel, then to Patricia.
"Michael, we need to talk.""
I shook my head.
"You're seven years too late.""
She walked toward the table.
"Please. Just listen.""
Daniel immediately stood.
"Vanessa, what are you doing here?""
She ignored him.
"I found something in our bedroom.""
I stared at the envelope.
"What?""
"Danielle's original hospital correspondence.""
Daniel's face changed.
"Give me that.""
Vanessa stepped away from him.
"No.""
For the first time, I saw her openly defy my brother.
Robert extended his hand.
"May I examine it?""
She handed him the envelope.
Inside were several letters, medical records, and a small photograph.
Robert examined the first page.
"This is a copy of a hospital access log.""
He looked at Vanessa.
"Where did you get this?""
"It was inside a box Daniel gave me years ago. He told me to keep it somewhere safe.""
Daniel laughed nervously.
"That's private information.""
Robert ignored him.
The access log showed that Danielle's medical file had been opened repeatedly by an administrative employee.
The employee identification number matched Vanessa's former hospital credentials.
I stared at my wife.
"You worked at the hospital where Danielle was treated?""
Vanessa nodded slowly.
"I was in patient administration.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She looked down.
"Because I knew how it would sound.""
"How it would sound?""
I pointed toward the paperwork.
"You had access to my dying wife's medical records, and you never told me?""
Vanessa began crying.
"I didn't alter her treatment records.""
"Then why were you accessing them?""
She took a shaky breath.
"Daniel asked me to check something.""
"What?""
"Whether Danielle had changed the beneficiary information.""
I stared at her.
"That's not a medical question.""
"I know.""
"Why would Daniel need to know?""
Vanessa looked at my brother.
"Because he was afraid she'd discovered the missing money.""
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
"You're lying!""
Vanessa flinched.
I turned toward him.
"Sit down.""
He remained standing.
Robert calmly placed the access log beside the forged amendment.
"There's another problem, Daniel.""
He pointed to the employee number.
"The access log records a second visit to Danielle's file, three days after her death.""
Vanessa nodded.
"That was me.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Daniel told me to retrieve a document from her medical records.""
"What document?""
"A signed authorization.""
Robert leaned forward.
"What authorization?""
Vanessa opened the envelope again and removed a folded page.
"This.""
It was a medical consent form.
Danielle's name appeared at the top.
The form supposedly authorized a change in her treatment plan.
But the signature looked wrong.
I knew Danielle's handwriting better than anyone.
I'd watched her sign birthday cards, school forms, Christmas lists, and hundreds of notes over the years.
This wasn't her signature.
"She never signed that," I whispered.
Vanessa nodded.
"I know.""
Daniel suddenly reached across the table.
"Give me that!""
Robert pulled the paper away.
"Do not touch these documents.""
Daniel pointed at Vanessa.
"You're going to ruin everything!""
She stood.
"You already ruined everything!""
Her voice echoed through the room.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then she turned toward me.
"I didn't know what Daniel was planning when I first met him. He told me Danielle had been hiding money from you. He said she wanted to leave you with nothing.""
I stared at her.
"So you believed him?""
"At first.""
"And then?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Then I found the transfers.""
Robert examined the medical form.
"Vanessa, did you witness Danielle signing this?""
"No.""
"Did you see anyone else sign it?""
She shook her head.
"Daniel gave it to me.""
I looked at my brother.
"Why?""
Daniel's expression was stone.
"Because she was already confused. We were trying to make sure her treatment decisions were handled properly.""
"Her treatment decisions?""
I leaned forward.
"Was she conscious when you gave her this?""
Daniel looked away.
Robert interrupted.
"We need to be careful here. This document requires independent forensic examination and review of the hospital's original records.""
Then he turned to Vanessa.
"Did you receive money for accessing Danielle's file?""
She hesitated.
Daniel immediately spoke.
"Don't answer that.""
I looked at her.
"Tell the truth.""
Vanessa lowered her head.
"Ten thousand dollars.""
I felt like someone had punched me.
"Daniel paid you ten thousand dollars?""
She nodded.
"For what?""
"To retrieve the documents and make sure nobody questioned the trust.""
Ethan, who had been silent for several minutes, finally spoke.
"So you took money from my mother's medical records, and then you took money from me?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Ethan, I didn't want to hurt you.""
"You charged me rent.""
"I was trying to help Madison.""
"You told me my father would throw me out.""
She started sobbing.
Ethan shook his head.
"Stop saying you were helping us. You were helping yourselves.""
Those words silenced the room.
Robert gathered the papers.
"I am preserving these records and arranging for independent examination. The attempted loan and ownership transfer will also be referred to the appropriate authorities.""
Daniel laughed.
"You can't prove anything.""
Robert looked at him.
"We have banking records, electronic messages, a disputed signature, and now documents connecting you to unauthorized access of medical information.""
Daniel looked at Patricia.
She was already packing her portfolio.
"Patricia, say something!""
She avoided his eyes.
"I was only paid to prepare documents.""
Robert raised an eyebrow.
"Documents you knew were disputed?""
She hurried toward the door.
Daniel followed her.
But before leaving, he turned toward me.
"You think you've won, Mike?""
I didn't answer.
He pointed at Vanessa.
"Ask her what happened to the original hospital recording.""
Vanessa went completely still.
I turned toward her.
"What recording?""
She looked terrified.
Then she whispered:
"I destroyed it.""
My stomach dropped.
"What did you destroy?""
"The security recording from Danielle's hospital room.""
Robert slowly put down his pen.
"Vanessa, what exactly did that recording show?""
She looked at me.
May you like
Then she said:
"Daniel wasn't alone when he entered Danielle's room that night.""
