Chapter 10: The Man Who Wasn't Supposed to Be Dead

I stared at the photograph until my eyes hurt.

Danielle was lying in her hospital bed.

Her face was pale. Her hair was thinner than I remembered. But her hand was clearly visible, gripping a small piece of paper.

Three words.

*HE IS NOT DEAD.*

I zoomed in.

The date beneath the photograph was impossible.

Four days after the hospital had officially recorded her death.

I immediately called Evelyn.

She answered on the first ring.

"Michael, did you receive the photograph?""

"Yes. Explain it.""

"I can't do this over the phone.""

"Then tell me where you are.""

"There's a diner near the old courthouse. Tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock.""

"Why tomorrow? Why not tonight?""

"Because someone is watching my apartment.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who?""

"I don't know. But a black SUV has been parked outside for three nights.""

I looked toward the window.

Across the street, a vehicle was sitting beneath a streetlight.

My heart skipped.

"Listen to me, Evelyn. Don't go anywhere alone.""

She whispered, "You don't understand. Daniel knows I contacted you.""

The call ended.

I stood motionless in the kitchen.

Then Ethan walked in.

"Dad? What's wrong?""

I showed him the photograph.

He stared at his mother.

"That's Mom.""

"Yes.""

"But why does it say she's alive four days after she died?""

"I don't know.""

He enlarged the image.

Then he noticed something I hadn't.

"Dad, look at the monitor.""

Behind Danielle's bed, a medical monitor displayed several readings.

Ethan pointed.

"Those numbers. They're not flat.""

I leaned closer.

He was right.

The monitor showed a heartbeat.

A living heartbeat.

"Does that mean Mom was alive when this picture was taken?""

"I think so.""

Ethan sat down.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then he whispered, "Dad, did they tell us the truth?""

I couldn't answer.

I'd held Danielle's hand when the hospital called me.

I'd identified her body.

I'd attended her funeral.

But now I was looking at evidence suggesting something had happened after the date of her supposed death.

I called Robert.

He answered immediately.

"Michael?""

"I have a photograph.""

I sent it to him.

There was silence on the other end.

Then Robert said, "Where did you get this?""

"Evelyn.""

"Don't show this to anyone else.""

"Why?""

"Because the date raises serious questions about the official medical timeline.""

I gripped the counter.

"Robert, could Danielle have been alive?""

"I don't know. But I want an independent medical examiner to review the records.""

I told him about the three words.

He asked me to read them aloud.

When I did, he went quiet.

"Michael, I think we need to consider another possibility.""

"Which is?""

"The photograph may not be evidence that Danielle was alive four days after her recorded death. It may be evidence that someone used her identity or altered the date.""

I looked at Ethan.

"Then why would she write that message?""

Robert paused.

"Because she may have been referring to someone else.""

I looked at the photograph again.

He is not dead.

Who?

Daniel?

A person connected to the hospital?

Or someone whose death had been falsely reported?

I didn't sleep that night.

At 8:15 the next morning, Ethan and I drove toward the courthouse.

The diner was nearly empty.

An elderly couple occupied a booth near the window. A waitress was wiping down the counter.

Evelyn sat in the last booth, wearing a baseball cap and oversized sunglasses.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, she immediately stood.

"Michael.""

I sat across from her.

Ethan remained beside me.

Evelyn looked at him.

"You have your mother's eyes.""

Ethan swallowed.

"Did you know my mother?""

"Yes. And I owe you an apology.""

She placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside were two photographs.

One showed Danielle in her hospital room.

The other showed Daniel standing beside a man in a dark suit.

I recognized the man immediately.

My younger brother.

But the man standing next to him was someone I had buried seven years earlier.

My wife's father.

Frank Carter.

Evelyn's father.

I looked at her.

"Your father died before Danielle.""

Evelyn nodded.

"That's what everyone was told.""

My mouth went dry.

"Are you saying he was alive?""

She lowered her voice.

"My father had been in a nursing facility under another name. Daniel arranged it.""

"Why?""

"Because Frank knew about the missing money. He knew Daniel had been using Danielle's trust to cover business debts.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Then what does the message mean?""

Evelyn pushed another paper toward me.

It was a handwritten note.

The handwriting belonged to Danielle.

Michael, if Frank is still alive, find him. He knows what Daniel did.

I looked up.

"Where is he?""

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know anymore.""

Then she reached into her handbag and removed an old hospital visitor badge.

"There's something else you need to know. Your brother didn't just arrange for my father to disappear.""

She looked at Ethan.

"He arranged for someone to be declared dead who wasn't supposed to be.""

My phone rang.

Robert.

I answered.

"Michael, we've recovered part of the hospital archive.""

"What did you find?""

His voice dropped.

"An additional patient record connected to Danielle's room.""

"Whose record?""

Robert took a breath.

Then he said:

"Frank Carter.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She began crying.

May you like

Because the man she'd believed was dead had apparently been admitted to the same hospital as her sister's mother.

And according to the recovered records, he had been discharged under Daniel's supervision.
