Chapter 11: The Missing Patient
"Where is my father?""
Evelyn's voice cracked as she stared at the recovered hospital record.
Robert had sent us a digital copy.
The admission date was seven years earlier.
The patient name was Frank Carter.
The discharge date was four days after Danielle's recorded death.
But the destination field was blank.
No nursing home.
No family residence.
No medical transfer.
Just a handwritten note:
*Released to authorized representative.*
The representative's signature was Daniel Williams.
I stared at the document.
"Your father wasn't dead," I said.
Evelyn shook her head.
"I believed he was. Daniel told our family that Dad had died from complications related to his heart condition.""
"Did you attend the funeral?""
She looked down.
"No. Daniel arranged everything. He said the body had already been cremated.""
Ethan leaned forward.
"Why would Uncle Daniel do that?""
Evelyn wiped her cheeks.
"Because my father knew something about the money your mother had discovered.""
"What money?""
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she opened her handbag and removed a small notebook.
"This belonged to my father. I kept it after he disappeared.""
The pages were filled with dates, names, and financial calculations.
Several entries mentioned Danielle's estate.
Others referred to payments from Daniel's company.
On the last page, there was a handwritten address.
An assisted-living facility called Greenfield House.
Evelyn pointed at it.
"That's where Dad was supposed to go after his discharge.""
Robert, who had joined us by phone, immediately asked her to send him a photograph.
"Michael, I recognize that facility," he said.
"Have you been there?""
"No. But I can confirm whether Frank Carter was ever admitted.""
I looked at Evelyn.
"Why didn't you tell anyone about this before?""
She stared at her hands.
"Daniel threatened to have me charged with falsifying medical records. He said I would lose my professional license and spend years in prison.""
"Did you help him?""
She nodded.
"I accessed Danielle's records. I retrieved the authorization form. I deleted the security footage.""
She began crying.
"I told myself I was protecting my family. But I was protecting Daniel.""
Ethan looked at her.
"Did you know my mother was afraid?""
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did you know she wanted to protect me?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you help her?""
Evelyn couldn't answer.
I understood Ethan's anger.
He wasn't interested in excuses.
Neither was I.
Robert interrupted.
"I've contacted Greenfield House. Their records department is checking the admission history.""
We waited.
The diner waitress brought us coffee.
Ethan didn't touch his.
Finally, Robert spoke again.
"They found something.""
I leaned forward.
"What?""
"Frank Carter was admitted under a different surname. The facility's records show he stayed there for eleven months.""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
"He's alive?""
"There's no confirmed death record associated with that admission.""
I felt a strange mixture of relief and dread.
"Where is he now?""
Robert paused.
"He was transferred to a private residence three years ago.""
"Whose residence?""
"That information isn't available in the initial report.""
Evelyn began shaking.
"Daniel.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"Daniel moved him. I'm sure of it.""
She pulled another paper from her handbag.
It was an old Christmas card.
The return address belonged to a property in northern Pennsylvania.
A handwritten message appeared inside.
Evelyn, I'm sorry I can't see you this year. Daniel says it's safer this way. Please don't look for me.
The signature was unmistakable.
Frank.
Evelyn began sobbing.
"He was alive. All this time, he was alive.""
I took a photograph of the card and sent it to Robert.
Within minutes, he called back.
"Michael, I found the property.""
"Where?""
"An isolated house outside Harrisburg. The ownership records connect it to one of Daniel's shell companies.""
I looked at Ethan.
"We're going there.""
Robert immediately objected.
"No. You are not confronting anyone. I'll coordinate with the appropriate authorities.""
I clenched my jaw.
"That's my wife's father.""
"And we need to establish his safety without compromising the investigation.""
I reluctantly agreed.
Three hours later, Robert called again.
The authorities had visited the property.
It was empty.
But they found medication, food, and a recent electricity bill.
Someone had been living there.
On the kitchen table was a photograph of Danielle and Ethan.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
Robert read it to me over the phone.
If Michael comes looking, tell him I finally remembered everything.
I felt my throat tighten.
"Remembered what?""
Robert continued.
"There's another sentence.""
I waited.
The night Danielle died, Daniel wasn't the only person who entered her room. I was there too.
Evelyn started shaking.
"What does that mean?""
Robert didn't answer.
Then he said, "There's a phone number on the back of the note.""
He read it aloud.
I immediately recognized the area code.
It belonged to a small town less than forty miles from where we were.
I called it.
A man's voice answered after three rings.
"Hello?""
"Is this Frank Carter?""
Silence.
Then a trembling voice responded.
"Who's asking?""
"My name is Michael Williams. I was married to Danielle.""
A long pause followed.
Then the man whispered:
"Michael?""
I closed my eyes.
"Yes.""
"Is Ethan with you?""
"Yes.""
Frank began crying.
"Put him on the phone.""
I handed it to my son.
"Hello?""
There was a moment of silence.
Then Frank spoke.
"Ethan, sweetheart. I need you to forgive me.""
Ethan's face crumpled.
"Grandpa?""
"Yes, sweetheart.""
"Where have you been?""
Frank sobbed.
"I've been hiding.""
"Why?""
"Because I was afraid of what Daniel would do.""
Ethan looked at me.
Then he asked the question none of us had considered.
"Grandpa, what did Uncle Daniel do to Mom?""
Frank took a shaky breath.
And his answer changed everything.
"Your mother didn't die because of her illness, Ethan. She died because she discovered that Daniel had been stealing from the family for years.""
I took the phone.
"Frank, I need you to tell me exactly what happened.""
His voice dropped.
"Michael, I saw Daniel enter Danielle's room that night. I saw him switch the medication bottle.""
My knees weakened.
"Did you tell the doctors?""
"I tried. But Daniel had already arranged for me to be declared incompetent. He had papers claiming I suffered from severe dementia.""
I looked at Evelyn.
She covered her mouth.
Frank continued.
"I kept quiet because he threatened to have me locked away permanently.""
"Where are you now?""
"I'm at a motel. I escaped two days ago.""
I felt my heart race.
"Stay where you are. We're coming.""
Then Frank said something else.
"Michael, there's one thing you need to understand.""
"What?""
"Daniel didn't start stealing after Danielle died.""
May you like
I waited.
"He started before she was even sick.""
